Earn your place on the ancient throne. The riches of the Persian empire await you with a massive RTP and high volatility.

If you would search for the slots with the highest RTP, you would see this slot in the very top spots of that list. Thrones of Persia’s big draw is its massive 98.81% Return To Player rate, which is abnormally high.

Tom Horn released Thrones of Persia in 2017. The slot has gained some traction because it looks magnificent on paper. Unfortunately, that is the problem of this slot. It’s good on paper, but when you play it, you start to see the issues.

If you are a lucky person, then this slot can be an amazing experience. This slot has high volatility and its best wins are focused on one single feature. Are you lucky enough to activate it?

Graphics and sound

One thing that I like about this slot is the theme. The game looks somewhat simplistic and the user-interface could use a more modern touch, but it all works well together. Thrones of Persia looks and sounds exactly the way it needs to.

The sandy city in the shadow of the ziggurats is a desolate place, where the people live their dreary lives. The great riches are only for the ruling class, who will want to keep it that way. The game is surprisingly good at setting the mood.

The soundscape does its job at bringing it all together. The music, the muffled sounds of the people and the victory fanfares are all working towards the same goal. Nothing is out of place.

I can easily see why some people can look at this game and say that it has aged. The slot does have a style that was more common a couple of years before it was released, but I kinda like it. The theme suits that art style. If you are looking for a flashy and vibrant game, then you will be disappointed.

Symbols and wins

The reels are filled with your average set of symbols. What is not normal, is that there are actually eleven regular symbols, and that is not even including the wild and scatter. The more symbols there are, the worse chances you have of hitting what you want.

The symbols themselves look nice. The low-tier ones are card symbols from nine to ace made from sandstone and the high-tier ones are colourful stone tablets. The ziggurat is a scatter and the king is the wild.

The game has a rather odd pay structure. It has a high RTP and high volatility, which do make a strange combination. Players are given back a lot of what they put in, but it is focused on just one particular feature, the free spins.

If you want to win anything major in this slot, you need to activate the Free Spin feature. It is just that simple. Activating the free spins is also a lot harder than it seems. You will often see two ziggurats, but getting that third one seems impossible. And this is the part where I eventually lost all interest to the game. I just can’t activate that feature even if my life depended on it.

Features

  • Free Spins: Visit the temple for valuable free spins

The temples hold the secret to massive riches. Get them on the reels at once and you can collect what is coming to you. Two scatters will give you a cash prize and three or more will activate the Free Spin feature.

When you start the spins, you will first visit the temple to see how the spins are going to play out. Look behind the stone tablets and see what additional bonuses you get. For example, you can get extra spins or even a hefty multiplier.

During the free spins, there will be another wild symbol on the reels. The Extra Wild symbol will replace any other symbol and will double all wins it’s a part of.

  • Gamble: Double or nothing

When you win something, you have an option to gamble it. Choose the colour of the card in front of you if you guessed correctly, you doubled up and can go again.

Some casinos can have a limit to the gamble feature. If your win is more than the limit, you are not given the option to gamble at all or have to stop guessing any more cards.

Final Thoughts

This is a slot that I really wanted to like. On paper, it looked great and when I first started to play it, it felt nice. But the more I played, the worst the experience got.

The biggest issue I have with the game is the Free Spin feature. The feature has a lot of potential and can give you massive wins. I just can’t ever activate it. I played a lot of this slot with real and play money and was able to do it once. Either I was just super unlucky, or the feature is built poorly.

In the end, I am just disappointed. It is great to see a slot with an RTP this high, but if you can’t access all of its features, so much of the game is lost. The smallest thing can ruin a slot for a person, and for me, it was this.
