Sahara Nights whisks players away to the Middle-East where we’re treated to the stories of the famous Arabian Nights with a slight Egyptian twist. The game features Free Spins, Sticky Wilds as well as Stacked Wilds to entertain you!

Released in 2019, Sahara Nights is one of the latest slots developed by Yggdrasil. The game uses a popular and rather overused setting as its backdrop but the usual quality of their slots shines through here as well. There is a 5-reel, 3-row playing field that’s seemingly placed in the middle of a palace while a dark night sky gives everything a blue tinge.

The game looks great, including the details around and behind the playing field. The real eye catchers are the symbols, with different characters taking the most prominent place. The low-paying symbols looked rather simple as coloured gems but they fit the theme well nonetheless. The game features 20 paylines with a High Volatility, making wins rather rare but generally big enough to make back your spins.

If you were expecting something highly original for the music I’m afraid I’ll have to disappoint you. The theme is carried through in the song that plays but it fits the setting well enough. It is also recorded in high quality so you won’t be suffering through the gameplay. The sound-effects are relevant to what’s happening on the screen and these have been tweaked somewhat to be original.

Symbols

Sahara Nights features a collection of symbols divided into high- and low-paying ones. The Stacked Wilds deserve special mention, the Genie fills the entire reel it lands on and is continuously animated as it stands there. The other high-paying symbols aren’t quite as intricately animated but they do move in their own original ways that fit.

The symbols are from highest to lowest:

  • Free Spins: Get 2 Free Spins symbols to activate the Free Spins mode.
  • Wild: Wilds substitute all other symbols in the game except the Free Spins symbol. Wilds only appear on reels 2, 3 and 4.
  • Sultan: Max. 350x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Princess: Max. 50x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Rogue: Max. 40x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Dagger: Max. 30x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Cup: Max. 20x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Red Gem: Max. 4x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Blue Gem: Max. 4x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Green Gem: Max. 4x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Orange Gem: Max. 4x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.

sahara nights free spins

Players can pick a bet between $0.20 and $100 per spin to help balance out their risk and reward. The game’s high volatility made me have a steady decline in funds though so I would warn players against betting too high too fast. The free spins mode did not trigger often enough to really feel like a balance with the low odds at winning during the base game.

There is a max. win of 3,068x your bet that might be appealing to some power players but in general, I would caution people against playing for that goal. I never had the idea I was close to winning it and it requires some more stars to align than in other slots.

Features

Sahara Nights doesn’t have too many features but the ones that are there are interesting enough to be worth mentioning. Players that have at least some experience with video slots will be familiar with these already.

  • Wilds: Wilds substitute all regular symbols in the game, helping to create the highest possible win.
  • Stacked Wilds: The Wild only appears on reels 2, 3 and 4 and automatically grows to fit the reel it’s on. Multiple Stacked Wilds can appear on the screen at the same time.
  • Free Spins: With 3 or more Free Spins symbols during the base game the Free Spins mode activates. The more Free Spins symbols are on screen, the more free spins the player gets to use. Triggering additional free spins is also possible.
  • Sticky Wilds: During the Free Spins mode, all Stacked Wilds become Sticky. They stay on the screen for the remainder of the free spins mode.

The base game plays fine with the Stacked Wilds showing up often enough to feel like a part of the game, even though they don’t always facilitate wins. There isn’t much else happening during the main part of the slot though which made it feel rather forgettable. I did enjoy watching the animations as the reels spun plus the sounds were nice and fitting.

sahara nights playing process

Playing the free spins mode was more exciting even though it didn’t activate as much as I would have liked. The Stacked Wilds are a little hit or miss as they show up noticeably less often than they do in the base game. This is probably because they also become Sticky here. When they do, they are more likely to help generate bigger wins.

The number of Free Spins symbols both during the base game and the free spins mode impact the number of free spins the player gets.

  • 2 Free Spins symbols: Get 2 extra free spins during the Free Spins mode.
  • 3 Free Spins symbols: Get 8 free spins and 2x your bet during the base game. Get 8 extra free spins and 2x your bet during the Free Spins mode.
  • 4 Free Spins symbols: Get 12 free spins and 20x your bet during the base game. Get 12 extra free spins and 20x your bet during the Free Spins mode.
  • 5 Free Spins symbols: Get 16 free spins and 2,000x your bet during the base game. Get 16 extra free spins and 2,000x your bet during the Free Spins mode.

Unfortunately, it felt almost impossible to get extra Free Spins during the free spins mode. I didn’t see any of them appear on the screen my entire time playing this game. It’s not something I think players should expect to happen, even though it’s obviously a possibility.

Conclusion

Sahara Nights is an acceptable Yggdrasil slot, which means it has amazing graphics and some okay gameplay. The game doesn’t do as much to change the gameplay as some of this developer’s other slots have done, but it still feels like it’s its own unique thing compared to other slots with the same theme.

Players that want a classic video slot with some updated features will have a good time even though the experience will likely not stick with them for long. People that are looking for something authentically Yggdrasil, with crazy mechanics and unique features, will be left disappointed.

The game does a great job at showing off the studio’s capabilities when it comes to their graphical prowess, there isn’t enough here to really make it memorable when we’re talking about the gameplay. Its tendency to slowly drain my funds also didn’t speak in its favour!
