Wizarding Wins is a slot with a clear mythical and magical setting that will allow players to experience some amazing feats. At the same time, the game also includes features such as free spins and wilds.

Even though Booming Games released this slot in 2021, it doesn’t really jump off the screen as a symbol of creativity and excellence. The whole game looks rather outdated, with a very basic 5-reel, 3-row presentation. All of the reels are the same blue background while most of the symbols are either card letters or simple drawings. There are a few animations when a symbol is part of a win but even this is minimal.

In the background, we can see a variety of items that could be connected to the idea of wizards. For example there’s a skull, a stack of books and a pen with ink. Some of the high-paying symbols are also associated with the theme, such as an owl, a flying broom and a witch’s hat. There is definitely also a connection to Harry Potter even though it’s not explicit. This mostly shows through the use of the steam train and the round glasses that are generally not associated with wizards.

When it comes to the music, this also feels very familiar for people who saw the Harry Potter movies. It’s not an identical match of course but they incorporated the same high tingles and harp sounds. Ironically, when getting a big win on 1 of the 25 paylines, or activating a feature the music and sound feels less connected to this famous wizard character and seems to do its own thing.

Symbols

Wizarding Wins includes the standard selection of symbols. The low-paying symbols are simple card letters that have not been adapted to fit the setting at all. They even appear in slightly modern fonts that feel disconnected from the theme. The high-paying symbols are different items that are either related to the idea of wizards in general, or the famous boy-wizard from the popular book series.

Players can expect High Volatility when they play this game, with the slot rewarding wins quite frequently but these being very low. The player will need to get the right combination of symbols and features to walk away with something more substantial. It is possible to augment your bet somewhat, allowing you to take a bigger or smaller risk. Players can pick between $0.25 and $25 per spin.

For those people who were hoping for a big jackpot, the slot has to disappoint you. The maximum win is 200x your bet which is incredibly low when compared to other slots. The only upside I could see while playing this game is that it is marginally easier to win it. There are 4 jackpots in the game, and during my time playing I won the smallest jackpot of 20x my bet once.

The symbols in the game include:

  • Wizard’s Hat (Bonus): With 3 or more Bonus symbols on the screen a jackpot is awarded. Max. 200x your bet with six-of-a-kind on the screen.
  • Snake (Wild): The wild substitutes all other symbols in the game, except the Scatter and Bonus symbols. Max. 40x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Train (Scatter): Get 3 Scatters on the screen to activate the free spins mode.
  • Glasses: Max. 16x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Owl: Max. 14x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Chest: Max. 12x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Flying Broom: Max. 10x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Ace: Max. 4x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • King: Max. 3.2x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Queen: Max. 2.4x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.

Features

Wizarding Wins takes things very easy and doesn’t really use many features to spice up the gameplay. Players that prefer simple video slots with only the most rudimentary gameplay will probably enjoy this game. The gameplay isn’t bad, but it will feel very standard for people who have played slots for a long time.

The features in the game are:

  • Wilds: Wilds substitute all regular symbols in the game.
  • Free Spins: With 3 or more scatter symbols on the screen the free spins mode is activated.
  • Jackpot: Get 3 or more Bonus symbols on the screen to be awarded a jackpot. There are 4 jackpots in total, only the highest reached jackpot is paid out.

Everything works as to be expected, with the free spins mode not even adding anything special to the gameplay. The only difference is that the possibility of winning the maximum jackpot of 200x your bet is enabled. During the base game, the highest number of Bonus symbols is five-of-a-kind. While playing the free spins mode, this is increased to a possible six-of-a-kind which is required for the Grand Jackpot.

I didn’t think the gameplay was anything to write home about but it was extremely standard. Players who are either more comfortable with this rudimentary type of gameplay or people who are new and want to get used to video slots might enjoy this though. There are very little considerations to make when playing, with the 3 features being very easily explained and working as you’d expect.

Conclusion

Wizarding Wins is a rather odd slot. It is clearly drawing inspiration from Harry Potter in more and less subtle ways. The design is rather average, I didn’t think the art nor animations were anything more than serviceable. The sound is nice but again draws heavily from the boy wizard story.

People who are looking for original or inventive gameplay won’t find it here either. If you enjoy the simpler classic slot gameplay, on the other hand, this is the game for you. It’s modern so includes all the expected features, but doesn’t add anything new either.

Finally, the lack of a big jackpot might turn away some high rollers. In my experience, triggering a jackpot now and then is actually quite doable. This will make it more fun to play, as the possibility of winning a jackpot is enticing no matter the size.
