Spinions Christmas Party shows us what it’s like to be part of a Christmas celebration with the Spinions. These cute little critters are having a blast, showing us how to have fun with wilds, re-spins and a free spins mode.

The game is based on the other Quickspin property Spinions. This shows us these familiar creatures in a Christmas setting, suitably released at the end of 2021. Players that have played the original slot will immediately recognize the art style since it largely looks the same. The slot is built around a 5-reel, 3-row playing field with 25 paylines.

As with the original slot, the graphics are great. The designers made the most out of the available space, with the symbols getting a lot of room to show off their details. In the background, we see that we’re in the Spinions village with the inhabitants looking at the reels. These are all animated slightly to make them come more alive. All in all, this presentation works very well.

While I was expecting a very prominent Christmas song to play while the reels spun, it kept itself in the background. During the base game, the music is very toned down and subtle. Sound effects that play when there’s a win are a lot louder and more generic. I’m not sure why they made that choice. I wouldn’t say it’s bad but it doesn’t really feel appropriate either. Especially when put in contrast with the music.

Symbols

Spinions Christmas Party has some of the same symbols as the original slot, while the rest is updated to fit the Christmas setting. We can see bottles of champagne with a Santa beard, bells with sunglasses and disco balls with a Christmas wreath. It all comes across as quite silly which fits the Spinions perfectly. All these are divided into high- and low-paying symbols, with the symbols that are worth the least represented by simple card letters.

The game has High Volatility which I found to be quite apparent while playing. Wins were few and far between, and often not very high. Only occasionally would I get a bigger win, usually as a result of the sticky wilds, a re-spin or the free spins mode. This means players are depending on the features to get any wins. The RTP of 96.05% meanwhile is almost exactly the average.

Players can deal with this volatility by changing their bets. For this, the game allows bets between $0.10 and $100 per spin. Larger bets will drain your funds faster but result in bigger wins. The opposite is true for smaller bets. There is a maximum win of 1,876x your bet which is quite paltry compared to other slots, even those with lower volatility.

The symbols in the game include:

  • Wild: Max. 20x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Bonus: Get 3 Scatters on the screen to activate the free spins mode.
  • Champagne: Max. 8x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a win line.
  • Turkey: Max. 6x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a win line.
  • Bell: Max. 6x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a win line.
  • Disco Ball: Max. 5x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a win line.
  • Gingerbread Man: Max. 5x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a win line.
  • Ace: Max. 2.4x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a win line.
  • King: Max. 2.4x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a win line.
  • Queen: Max. 2.4x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a win line.
  • Jack: Max. 2.4x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a win line.
  • 10: Max. 2.4x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a win line.

Features

Spinions Christmas Party only uses a handful of features to change up the gameplay. These will be familiar if you played the original game since they are basically the same. In case you haven’t played that one, I will cover them quickly.

The features include:

  • Wilds: Wilds substitute all regular symbols in the game, except the Scatter symbol.
  • Sticky Wilds: When 2 or more Wilds appear during the base game, they become sticky and a re-spin is triggered. In the free spins mode, all Wilds are sticky. Sticky Wilds stay in place even when the reels spin.
  • Re-Spins: Get 2 or more Wilds on the screen at the same time during the base game to activate a re-spin. The reels spin again for free, with the Wilds staying in place. This can happen multiple times.
  • Free Spins: With 3 Scatters on the screen players receive 10 free spins. During the free spins mode, all Wilds are Sticky.

I thought that the gameplay was entertaining enough even though the features weren’t very special. They have all been done hundreds of times before, but they can result in some pretty big wins. Especially the free spins mode is interesting because of this. Players that manage to get multiple wilds on the screen can see their funds jump up considerably.

The base game is a lot less exciting. The Wilds appear quite often but there are only a few times I managed to trigger a re-spin. The Sticky Wilds are a nice addition but they won’t often help to grant you a big win. As such, you are quite heavily dependent on activating the free spins mode.

This wasn’t an impossible task as I did manage to do it a few times during my time playing. However, it did feel like playing the base game was mostly a waste of time. I spent most of my time waiting for the Scatters to show up and let me play the actually interesting part of the game.

Conclusion

Spinions Christmas Party is a perfectly fine slot that is especially nice for fans of the original slot. If you’re in the Christmas mood, no matter what time of year it is, you can get some inspiration from this slot. The Spinions are entertaining without becoming annoying, and they are given enough room to give the game some character.

If you’re looking for something wholly original or even creative, this slot is not for you. It doesn’t do anything poorly but it just doesn’t feel like anything special. The graphics are great, the sound design is fine but the overall experience felt somewhat lacking. Still, I thought the use of the features did make for interesting free spins. It’s just a matter of getting there.

Players that want to win it big will not get what they are looking for here. The jackpot is small, even when compared to low volatility slots. You’ll most likely enjoy this game if you’re just looking to pass the time in the cold winter months. Or perhaps you’re in the mood for some Christmas cheer!
