Embark on a journey back in time with NetEnt’s Parthenon: Quest for Immortality launched in the summer of 2021. This is a gorgeously designed slot utilising familiar imagery from the Classical Greek era. It is a 6-reel slot with a 4, 5, 5, 5, 5, 4 reel combination.
There are no paylines and instead wins are registered whenever there are 3 (2 in the case of Medusa) or more matching symbols adjacent to each other starting from left to right. As wins are registered the symbols will disappear and are replaced by falling tiles (cascading reels, or “avalanche” as NetEnt calls the feature). This goes on until there are no more winning combinations.
Whilst many are familiar with the avalanche feature, in Parthenon, something else is added to the mix. That’s the Wild Generation Zone feature which substitutes winning symbols within the zone with wilds helping to create even more wins.
All symbols within Parthenon: Quest for Immortality are beautifully designed. High-paying symbols take the form of mythic objects and lower-paying symbols are represented by card suits.
The symbols, from highest to the lowest consist of:
Occupying the crown position on top of the reels the Wild Generation Zone adds a 4-reel column on top of the reels. Any winning tile within this zone will be refilled with a Wild tile which substitutes for all tiles bar the scatter. Wild tiles can continue reappearing until no more wins are registered within the zone.
Landing 3 or more scatter tiles anywhere on the grid will trigger the bonus round with 8 free spins. An extra 4 spins are added for any other scatter tile in this combination. Within the bonus round, 3 scatter tiles will award an extra 2 free spins.
The Wild Generation Zone is what makes this game special. When there is a string of wins with continuous wilds being added into the mix, these are those moments when the game gets really exciting. The golden Medusa head can also yield some impressive wins and I even managed to scale upwards of 80x in the base game on two occasions thanks to it.
But in between these moments, the game starts getting a bit tedious. Unfortunately, as you go through the spins and few or no wins are registered, the game gets repetitive. On the base game, most of the bigger wins seem to hover around the 10x range, although I did register quite a few wins going up to 30x.
As with some other NetEnt games, it took me a stupid amount of time to get into the bonus round. I’m talking around 400 spins where there was no bonus round in sight. This caused a bit of frustration, no matter how many times I received Wild chain reactions.
Volatility is set to high, although I did find myself playing and staying more or less where I was in terms of funds. Even though the RTP is set to 96.03% (however, always make sure you check this as different casinos can lower it), it might be a good game to play when you need to wager a bonus.
