Dracula Awakening is a slot that is set in a dark, damp castle where the most famous vampire in history resides. Players get to experience his life as we go from day to night, encountering different fellow vampires as well as free spins and sticky wilds.
This slot was released in 2021 by Red Tiger. This studio used to focus a lot on oriental themes but has recently begun to stretch its (bat) wings. Now they bring us a slot that is based around the famous Dracula. As such, it uses plenty of famous iconography and different visual elements we associate with this vampire.
The game is built around a 5-reel, 4-row playing field that holds the pretty standard number of 30 paylines. Players can expect to see familiar imagery like Dracula himself, crosses and chalices, as well as a looming castle in the background. It all looks pretty good but the graphics are fully 3D which in my experience don’t really age well.
Such a gothic theme needs a fitting song and the developers surprisingly chose a pretty fast song to go with it. This seems to be original and although it is a bit of a shock to hear it, I found it to be quite fitting. The sound effects meanwhile are a lot more generic and also don’t fit the setting as well. The way they interrupt the background music made it jarring to listen to.
Dracula Awakening makes use of the expected division of symbols. High-paying symbols are represented by different unique symbols that fit the theme. Some of these are animated, mostly the different characters. The low-paying symbols are card letters. Although they don’t fit the setting as well, they were designed to look gothic. I always appreciate that extra step by a developer.
Players should be ready for a High Volatility slot. During my time playing, I found that the game was very light on wins and my funds dropped rather fast. Although you might have a different experience, it is something to keep in mind. The RTP of 95.72% is also considerably lower than the average, meaning it’s harder for players to keep their funds steady.
In order to deal with the volatility, it’s possible to augment your bets. This can be done by selecting a bet between $0.10 and $20 per spin. Although the maximum bet isn’t as high as with other slots, considering the punishing volatility this is probably a good thing. When it comes to the jackpot, the maximum win is 5,317x your bet. This is only slightly above the average for a slot with this volatility.
Players can expect to see the following symbols:
Dracula Awakening makes use of several features to keep the game interesting. Players will notice that the slot alternates between Day and Night, enabling different elements and disabling others.
The features in the game include:
The game has a tracker at the top of the screen that shows the progression of time. Players will find themselves alternating between the Day and the Night phase. When it comes to the appearance of the slot, not much changes. The background gets a little lighter during the Day and a bit darker during the Night.
What’s more interesting is the shift in features. During the Day Phase, players can find Eclipse symbols on the screen. These act like Scatters, and having 3 of them on the screen activates the free spins mode. During the free spins mode, a Stacked Wild is always present on reel 3.
The Night Phase changes the regular Dracula Wild into the Stacked Wild. When this Stacked Wild is on the screen, any Female Vampires are turned into Wilds. These are only sticky during the free spins mode as they disappear as soon as the Stacked Wild does.
Dracula Awakening uses an iconic character as the basis for a fun if simple slot. The graphics look fine now but I’m worried they will start to look outdated soon. That’s just an unfortunate reality of 3D graphics. Nonetheless, they ooze character and really help set the mood. The music is another element that helps create the right vibe for the player.
When it comes to gameplay, it’s a bit harder to be positive. The features are solid and I enjoyed the Day/Night cycle. Especially considering the vampire theme it made sense to include it. There’s also the benefit of having different features appear. Unfortunately, the high volatility felt very punishing and I never thought I could recover my losses. The jackpot is also not big enough compared to other slots to warrant the effort.
If you are a fan of vampires then this game will surely offer you a good time. Players that enjoy features that only appear some of the time, or are augmented by other elements can also find something here. High rollers on the other hand are less likely to have such a positive experience.
