Betty, Boris and Boo introduces us to a trio of seemingly friendly ghosts that haunt an empty mansion. Players are entertained by the three spectres as the game gives access to free spins, sticky wilds and colossal symbols.
The game was developed and released by Red Tiger, the studio that in my mind usually makes Asian themed slots but have finally decided to branch out as this game released in 2020 shows us. There is a clear focus on establishing a friendly but spooky setting, giving room to three ghostly characters that still appear friendly. The background gives us a glimpse of a haunted mansion but not much more.
Players get to play with its 5-reel, 4-row playing field that holds a total of 30 win lines. The symbols are actually all original, even the low-paying ones. They hide the card suits in their design but at first glance look like ornate hand mirrors. I would have liked to have seen some more animations to help make the game come alive but it still feels pretty engaging.
When it comes to the sound-design, Betty, Boris and Boo has made some odd choices. There isn’t a steady song playing in the background but instead, each spins starts and stops a brief part of a song. This can make it sound pretty jarring. When it comes to the effects there’s not much to mention as it all sticks with the usual jingles and bells.
The symbols in Betty, Boris and Boo are only slightly animated and usually in ways that aren’t related to the image itself. Instead, the winning tiles are highlighted and show an effect behind them. The design of the symbols does look good though, and with the variety in colours and shapes, they stay easily distinguishable.
The symbols in the game include:
Although wins aren’t easy to reach due to the High Volatility, the game does reward players that get them. As I played the game, the slot awarded me quite often with bigger wins which resulted in me having a rather high average. Players can also aim for the max. win of 5,000x your bet.
Betty, Boris and Boo has a few features which are almost all hidden behind the free spins mode. This makes the free spins mode extremely important for players who are looking for big wins, while also adding to the volatility. If you are unable to reach it, you will probably suffer with your funds.
The features in the game include:
With its focus on free spins and the special features that work during this part of the game, players are incentivised to constantly try and get into this mode. This will prove harder than it seems, and I would often go long periods of time without activating the free spins.
Once it does happen, there is a large likelihood that players will get rewarded with a big win. Even though the different features aren’t very original they do work well. I found the Sticky Wilds to be the most profitable but as the 3 ghost features can mix and match it will result in interesting combinations.
I thought the features are a nice addition to the game even though they are largely gated behind the free spins mode. By having them only appear when getting Scatter symbols, the free spins become a focal point of the slot. If players aren’t as interested in delayed gratification and prefer to see bigger wins during the base game, they might not be so endeared by the slot.
Betty, Boris and Boo is a fun slot by Red Tiger that shows off their ability to think of new concepts and create fitting, appealing graphics to bring the theme to life. There are enough animations that help keep the players visually interested. I don’t think the sound-design is quite as effective but that feels like only a small part of the experience.
It’s a matter of taste if players will enjoy the fact that the features are hidden mainly behind the free spins mode and their ability to activate it. The free spins mode is made to feel like an essential element of the game and it is, which makes not activating it feel like you’re losing out.
If you are someone that doesn’t mind having to wait for wins but when they appear they are likely to be big, Betty, Boris and Boo will deliver. The game has a max. win of 5,000x your bet to entice you, and players can pick a bet between $0.10 and $20 per spin.
