Atlantis is a Red Tiger slot which takes us deep beneath the waves to the hidden city of Atlantis. Here we are not only treated to glorious cityscapes and piles of gold but also free spins, stacked wilds and multipliers.

The slot is built around a 5-reel, 4-row playing field with 30 paylines. As a game that was released in 2020, the graphics look great and everything has a fresh and appealing feel to it. The symbols are all very large, and when part of a payline often play a brief animation. In the background, we can vaguely see buildings through the water but we are never allowed to see them up close.

The game has cascading reels, meaning that symbols that are part of a win will drop away and make room for new ones. This is animated to make it obvious these tiles have weight as they fall down, bouncing slightly before coming to a rest. It all looks pretty solid, even though the low-paying symbols are card suits and not original designs.

As for the sound, Red Tiger didn’t go too far in developing it. The different wins have fitting sounds but in terms of music, there isn’t a lot to hear. We can hear sombre drumming in the background as we play the base game, probably to amplify the notion we are deep under the ocean. Only during the free spins mode are we treated to a bit more energetic music.

Symbols

Atlantis shows off the design of their high-paying symbols. All of them are mostly coated in gold to amplify the opulence of the sunken city. This can make them look somewhat similar, but thanks to the original designs, it’s still easy to tell them apart. Meanwhile, the low-paying symbols are just card suits without any particular creativity to make them look or feel like part of the setting.

The symbols you’ll find in this slot include:

  • Treasure Chest: Adds a Stacked Wild with a random multiplier to the reel.
  • Wild: Substitutes all regular symbols in the game.
  • Scatter: Get 3 or more Scatter symbols on the screen to activate the free spins mode.
  • City: Max. 150 coins with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Cup: Max. 120 coins with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Magnifier: Max. 90 coins with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Shell: Max. 75 coins with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Anchor: Max. 60 coins with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Spade: Max. 36 coins with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Heart: Max. 30 coins with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Diamond: Max. 24 coins with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Club: Max. 15 coins with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.

The payouts for each symbol are relatively low, especially considering the High Volatility of the game. However, during my time playing, I found the Stacked Wilds to often facilitate multiple wins at a time which made it more likely the player got a big win. This would then compensate for the lower payouts per win.

Features

Atlantis is largely a pretty standard slot, using popular features in different ways to create an original game. As always though, it depends on how these features interact with each other to determine if it was a success. To begin with, a short summary of the included features:

  • Cascading Reels: Anytime there is a win on the screen, the symbols involved disappear and are replaced with new symbols. This continues as long as new wins are created.
  • Stacked Wilds: Whenever the special Treasure Chest symbol makes it to the bottom, it will open up and add a Stacked Wild to the reel.
  • Multipliers: Stacked Wilds, as well as free spins, have a random multiplier associated with them.
  • Free Spins: With 3 or more Scatter symbols on the screen the Free Spins mode is activated. Players receive 10 or more free spins to play with. During this mode, Treasure Chests will increase the multiplier with 5x your bet increments.

The features included in this slot aren’t the most original but some of them aren’t wildly used either. The main ones players will be dealing with during their time playing are the cascading reels. These appear anytime there is a win, causing the symbols involved to fall away and be replaced by new symbols.

This can continue for quite a long time, especially when there is a Treasure Chest that makes it to the bottom row. When this happens, it adds Stacked Wilds to the playing field. If any wins come out of that, they drop away and the cascading continues. Although not as profitable as the Free Spins mode in my experience, it did offer some extra coins on occasion.

Something that is connected to the other features but can still have a big impact are the multipliers. Both the Stacked Wilds and the Free Spins mode will randomly receive a multiplier, but the Free Spins mode theoretically has an unlimited multiplier. If during the Free Spins mode a Treasure Chest opens up, the active multiplier will receive an additional 5x on top of it.

I found the features to play a pretty important part in the general gameplay. Obviously, the cascading reels are always active, but the Stacked Wilds also appeared quite frequently. The Free Spins mode was the rarest but having it appear was a likely indication of some big wins.

Conclusion

Atlantis is a Red Tiger slot that doesn’t really overflow with creativity but what is there is done well and competently. The visuals are good, with a lot of original art in both the playing field and the background. The animations are simple but effective. I think they could have done more with the music but what they have is acceptable.

Players that are looking for something wholly unique or completely sticking to classic formats will walk away disappointed from this slot. People who prefer the comfortable middle ground of video slots with some modern features but still standard gameplay will feel right at home.

You can pick a bet between $0.10 and $20 per spin, while the max. win of 5,202x your bet is actually quite good. Since the game has high volatility I would advise people to start off betting pretty low and only after they get a feel of the game increasing their bets, if they are so inclined.
