Totem Island shows us a macabre island filled with skulls and grizzly totems as the reels spin. With multipliers, Wilds and a Free Spins mode it might be worth adventuring to this island to see what it has to offer.

This slot was developed by Evoplay Entertainment and released in 2015. Even though that makes it quite old by video slot standards it still looks great. The background shows a dark, grim-looking tropical island while the 5-reel, 3-row playing field is flanked by different masks and skulls as well as an animated inhabitant of the island.

There is a lot of movement while the game plays, with the inhabitant randomly scratching his foot or jumping through a portal. When one of the 20 paylines hit a win, he gets showered by gold as the symbols themselves spin. The rest of the game is unfortunately not as animated but I think that’s more common.

The symbols used in the slot are all designed to fit the theme even though they also use card letters. Still, everything is made to look like it was either found or crafted on the island and I appreciate the effort.

Totem Island has some decent sound design to go with the animations. The jingles for when you win are rather standard but triggering the free spins mode or just playing the game will play a song that captures the rather dark but tropical setting of the game.

The game features a wide collection of symbols but the slot hovers around Medium Volatility. I found this to fit my experience as well, not granting wins all the time but them being reasonably big when they did occur. Players can choose a bet between $0.20 and $400 per spin to balance out the reward a little.

The symbols are:

  • Bonus: Get 3 or more Bonus symbols to activate the Free Spins mode.
  • Scatter: Get 3 or more Scatter Symbols to receive 20 free spins. If Scatter and Wild appear at the same time then Scatter stays in place during the Respin. Max 5x your bet with five-of-a-kind on the screen.
  • Wild: Wilds substitute all other symbols except Bonus and Scatter. Wilds will automatically trigger a Respin.
  • Blue Mask: Max. 20x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Red Mask: Max. 10x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Green Mask: Max. 5x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Ace: Max. 3x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • King: Max. 1.5x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Queen: Max. 1x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Jack: Max. 0.75x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • 10: Max. 0.5x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.

The game often grants more than one win at a time which is why the payouts are rather low, even for the five-of-a-kind wins. In general, I found my funds to go up but this is obviously not a guarantee.

Totem Island doesn’t make use of the most original features but the ones that are there do offer some interesting change to the basic gameplay. Players that enjoy a classic slot with some variation will probably be enjoying these the most.

  • Stacked Wilds: Wilds substitute all regular symbols in the game. Wilds only appear on reel 3 and become Stacked. Getting a Stacked Wild will immediately grant the player 1 Respin.
  • Respins: Respins make the Stacked Wild sticky and spin the rest of the reels again. Getting a win will trigger another respin.
  • Free Spins: Getting 3 or more Scatter Symbols on the screen will activate the Free Spins mode with 20 free spins. It’s possible to get additional free spins during this mode.
  • Multiplier: After your free spins finish, players get the opportunity to pick a 2x or 3x multiplier to all their wins.
  • Bonus Game: With 3 Bonus Symbols on the screen the Bonus Game activates. Choose element stones until you get 3 stones of the same element to receive a coin win.

Because of the Stacked Wild that showed up quite regularly, getting more than a single win was quite common. The Stacked Wild also triggers a respin, making a win through that more likely as well. The gameplay is quick and simple with the autoplay and quick spin functionality both being easy to turn on and off.

Getting into the Free Spins mode wasn’t difficult and I triggered it regularly. During the free spins mode, the player receives 20 free spins. Wilds can appear but Bonus Symbols can’t. After the free spins are done the game shows us 3 cards, letting the player pick one. The cards hide a 2x multiplier, a 3x multiplier and another 20 free spins. Either of the multipliers is applied to the total win. It’s only possible to get these cards shown once, so you won’t get to chain free spins together forever.

The Bonus Game was a lot harder to get into. Once that happened, the game would show a field of 12 stones, hiding 3 sets of 4 colours. The player gets to pick stones until they have gotten 3 of the same colour and then receive the associated coin win.

I thought the features were simple enough to be quickly understood but offered enough to the gameplay to make it varied and interesting. Players should have no problem picking up on it and if you’re not a complete beginner they’ll point themselves out as you play.

Totem Island is a good slot with a lot of character. I liked the animated character that flanks the playing field and the design that was put into the game. The sounds aren’t too special but still good and they fit the theme well too. The gameplay is also rather quick and easy, and I think a lot of regular players will have a good time with this slot.

The game has a max. win of 1,299x your bet which might not be the highest number out there but I feel it is a decent enough amount. Coupled with the ability to pick a bet this can make the total win quite big.

During my time playing, I got quite a lot of wins and my funds increased remarkably fast before dropping just as fast. Be aware of this as you play along. The volatility is listed as medium, but it did vary over the course of my time playing.
