The cats have taken over and the organisation is running the show. Be nice to The Catfather and you will get your fish.

Pragmatic Play let the cats out to play in February of 2016. The Catfather slot was quite popular among the players and saw a lot of play after its release. People on the Internet love cats, who could have known?

The big draw of The Catfather is in its prize structure. It has a massive 98.1% RTP and low volatility, which adds up to a slot that hands out a constant stream of wins. They may not be big, but at least there are no dry spells.

The Catfather was actually so popular, that it got a sequel at the end of the same year. The Catfather 2 takes the same concept, but makes it more volatile.

Graphics and sound

The Catfather is a combination of subtle opulence and cutesy. The juxtaposition of a wealthy crime organisation and a bunch of adorable cats is amusing, and that is the core idea this slot is built around. The purple and gold colour scheme is just icing on the cake.

The cat gang is full of funny and slightly stereotypical criminals. They each have a lot of personality and you could even make a TV series or a Saturday-morning cartoon out of them.

I can’t even remember how many slots I have seen, where the music is strong, but the sound effects are weak. The Catfather suffers from this as well. I would like to listen to the music more, as the combination of classical instruments and hip hop is a good musical match for this theme. If they had paid the same amount of attention to the sound effects, we wouldn’t have these bland stock sounds.

Symbols and wins

The symbols are divided in two groups, the bling and the cats. The low-tier symbols are diamond-studded card symbols from queen to ace, and the high-tier symbols are the members of the organisation.

There is one small detail that I love about the symbols, which I would like to see in other games. There are small paw prints next to each cat and they tell you how valuable the symbol is. The lowest has one the kingpin has five.

The slot has two special symbols, a wild and a scatter. The scatter is a tied-up mouse and you need at least three of them to activate the Free Spin feature. The wilds you see on the reels are just normal wilds, but if you are lucky, they might get bored and get even wilder. That one is called the Random Stacked Wild feature, which, as the name implies, is a random feature that can activate on any spin.

The slot pays out constantly. There are no dry spells here and you are going to get a win on most of the spins. The wins might be tiny, but they do add up and little it better than nothing. Surprisingly, you don’t need to get long combinations to get back more than you wagered. Four of almost any symbol is enough, and even three of some cats will do.

What was most surprising to me, was the free spins. Usually in a slot like this, the Free Spin feature is just a couple of spins and nothing great. The Catfather actually has 4x multiplier on all wins during free spins.

Features

  • Win Both Ways: Cats are nimble and cat twist in any direction

Cats can move and twist like no other, so it is natural that the wins are nimble as well. You can win with combinations starting either from the left side or the right side. A payline will only pay a single win, so if you get multiple on one line, only the most valuable will be paid.

  • Random Stacked Wilds: The night is getting wild and cats are climbing on the walls

The cats are going wild and the wilds get even wilder. At the start of any round, you can get a random bonus. If you see the words ‘It’s a Wild Night”, you can get up to three full-length stacked wilds on reels 2, 3 and 4. The feature is completely random, as is the amount of wilds you get.

  • Free Spins: Chase the mice for a big prize

The mice are giving you problems, so it is time to teach them a lesson. Catch at least three mice, i.e. scatter symbols, and you have just activated the Free Spin feature. You get either 10, 15 or 25 spins depending on how many scatters you get.

During the free spins, all wins are paid with an extra 4x multiplier.

Final Thoughts

The Catfather is a perfect example of a mediocre game, that can be perfect for the right player. Sure, this slot isn’t innovative or breathtakingly beautiful, but it is nice and fun to play. But, if you happen to like slots with cats or this kind of a prize structure, this slot is perfect.

For me, it was a pleasant experience. I do like a game where I can play for a long time with a single deposit, and this is just that. Besides, who doesn’t like a bunch of cute cats running a criminal organisation? The theme is just adorable.

If you are looking for a slot that can be enjoyed for a long time, then try The Catfather. Don’t expect to hit some super mega jackpot with one spin, because you are not going to. With this slot, you will slowly build up your bankroll and enjoy the game while you’re at it.
