Mr. Macau brings us to the massive casinos in the East where we are greeted by this interesting character. Besides the titular manager of the casino, this slot also offers players sticky wilds, free spins and random wilds.
The game was developed and released by Betsoft in 2021, which means it’s one of their latest releases and shows off what this studio is capable of. Players are treated to a brightly coloured game with a number of different animations on its 5-reel, 3-row playing field. In total there are 20 paylines on which to get a win.
The style of the slot reminds us of the classic casino appearance you can find all over the world. A lot of dark red and gold, with flashing lights to draw your attention. Players will be easily dazzled by the impressive amount of details hidden in the game. Whenever there’s a win the winning symbols move around as well as showing the total amount won.
When it comes to the sound, the game has a surprisingly low energy soundtrack playing in the background. During the base game, you will only hear a very lazy jazz song that is mostly dominated by a faint trumpet playing. Only when the free spins mode is triggered does the music pick up somewhat. There are louder sound effects that play when the spins reel or when there’s a win but it’s still very quiet.
Mr. Macau uses a selection of familiar symbols to fill the reels. They are all drawn well with a lot of interest and different subtle animations. There are dice that sparkle in the light. And the 88 is shaped as a sign. Meanwhile, the character of Mr. Macau himself is also present on the playing field but he’s unfortunately not very animated at all.
When it comes to the gameplay, the slot has Medium Volatility. This will grant players an average shot at getting a win. They can pick a bet between $0.16 and $24 per spin. The game also offers a maximum win of 4,338x your bet. This is quite high considering its volatility but since the maximum bet is lower than most other slots, it still averages out a little below what you could normally win if you’re a power player.
The different symbols in the game include:
Mr. Macau also comes with a set of features. Although these aren’t generally going to be turning any heads they do work well together. Players who are used to the regular type of gameplay most slots offer will easily be able to adjust to this game.
The features included in the slot are:
The features are simple but effective. I did need to look at the paytable to see that the triple 7 acted as the scatter since that’s not very clear during the game itself. It was also quite hard to activate the free spins mode, having only seen it trigger once in about an hour of play.
What I did like was the feature where the slot might trigger a sticky wild. This happens whenever a spin doesn’t yield any wins. When this happens, a random symbol is selected which appears to the right of the playing field. Once that symbol appears on the screen, it will become sticky and act as a wild.
This will continue for as long as they don’t trigger a win, at which point the sticky wilds will disappear. If the player has some good fortune, they might be able to fill most of the screen with sticky wilds before it actually triggers a win. This would be a good way to get a big win.
I found that during the rest of the game, Wilds were also pretty common. They can only appear on reels 2, 3, 4 and 5 because they have no value on their own. They simply are worth whichever symbol they substitute to create a win.
Mr. Macau is a nice-looking slot that doesn’t really do a lot of special inventive things. That doesn’t mean it’s not a good slot to play. The features you’ll find here are pretty simple but they are proven effective.
I would have liked to have seen the free spins mode activate a bit more often. Although the game has medium volatility I did find it quite hard to get bigger wins and as a result, my funds went down considerably. As you can see in the list of symbols, the payouts are also quite low which means that it’s even harder to get any significant wins.
Finally, the free spins mode is the only place to get multiplier wilds. The downside is that this requires at least 4 scatter symbols. With how hard it is to activate the free spins mode at all this seemed like an unnecessary obstruction. Only power players will likely ever really profit from that feature.
