Can you get a good night’s sleep when the dreadful ghosts are back to haunt poor old Ebenezer Scrooge in Holiday Spirits?

Play’n GO released their Christmas slot for 2020 right before December. Although the game is surprisingly good, it is by no means original.

We have seen Ebenezer Scrooge and the whole Christmas Carol thing before, for example in Betsoft’s A Christmas Carol slot. The mechanics are nothing new either, as this is a reskin of Chronos Joker, which Play’n GO released a year prior.

That being said, this is a good game. If you are looking for something fun to play while you wait for Santa, then this could be the perfect game for that.

Holiday Spirits is a thematic slot with amazing music and visuals. The volatility is set to medium and you get to enjoy a nice array of special features.

Graphics and sound

I guess we all know the story of Ebenezer Scrooge and the ghosts already. Although it has been used a lot in pop culture, it is a classic that does the job.

The slot looks amazing and the cartoony style works well. You can instantly tell the characters apart and all the symbols are clear. Every little detail is thought-out and nothing is half-assed.

The music in this slot is wonderful. The orchestral song starts off like a Christmas song, but it changes as the game goes on. When the ghosts are showing their visions, the song gets twisted into something more dramatic or even scary.

The same can be said about the animation. The basic animations all work well, but pay attention to the background. They warp and change with the visions and what you see isn’t always so calm and pleasant. When you see the vision of a ghastly future, you can see the ruins of Scrooge’s estate.

Play’n GO did a wonderful job with Holiday Spirits and it truly deserves all the praise. The game is gorgeous and I love how it all comes together. The visual details, the ever-changing music and the striking animations all play a part in this great creation.

Symbols and wins

The great design of Holiday Spirits can be seen in the symbols. They all fit the theme, look great and are easy to tell apart. There are 4 low-tier ornaments, 4 high-tier ghosts, including Scrooge’s former business partner, and Ebenezer Scrooge as a wild.

The paytable isn’t very linear. The low-tier symbols can only give you your bet back at best, the ghosts are worth up to 4x your wager and Scrooge stands alone with a whopping 16x payout.

This is all due to the multipliers. The clock on the mantle strikes every once in a while and adds a multiplier for that round. It can be 2x, 3x, 4x or 10x, which is why all the wins are so low. The clock also has a second role, as it can activate all of the special features.

If you get two stacks of the same symbol after the clock struck, you activate a Win Spin feature. What you get depends on what the multiplier was. They are all basically the same guaranteed Win Spin feature, except the multiplier can either increase, stay the same or decrease.

The game has medium volatility, which means that a single feature activation isn’t going to win you a fortune. The wins are somewhat low in general, but the special features will activate often. This is a game that you want to play for a good while.

  • Ebenezer’s Clock: When the clock strikes, the game changes

The clock on the mantle is an ominous sign. Is this the hour a ghost will appear, or will you get to rest for a while more?

When you hear the clock strike on the hour, it will first give you a multiplier. If you get a win, then it will be multiplied by that number and the game continues normally. If you don’t win, but get two full reels of the same symbol, with or without a wild, one of the ghosts will appear.

Depending on what the multiplier was on the clock, you will activate one of the Win Spin features. The two stacks are locked in place and you are whisked away to a vision.

  • Win Spins of Christmas Future: The future can become bright

The future wasn’t bright for Scrooge, but he knew that things could still change. If the multiplier was 2x, then your Win Spins are all about the future.

Every re-spin will increase the multiplier by one step. There will be a guaranteed win if it goes up to 10x.

  • Win Spins of Christmas Present: What is happening, can’t be changed

This isn’t an easy Christmas for everyone, but there is still happiness left. If the multiplier was 3x, 4x or 5x, you will see visions of Christmas Present.

The multiplier will be locked with the stacked symbols. You get to spin until you get a win.

  • Win Spins of Christmas Past: The past can be devastating

Your memories may look bright, but you can’t live in them. If the multiplier was 10x, then it is time to see what happened in the past.

Every re-spin will decrease your multiplier by one step. If it gets down to 2x, you get a guaranteed win.

  • Ebenezer’s Gift: Scrooge has finally learned something

Scrooge took the visions to heart and is trying to change. He will randomly give his present to you when the clock strikes or when you start a Win Spin feature. His gift will double the current multiplier.

Final Thoughts

Holiday Spirits is a great Christmas slot. The theme is well-utilized and the visuals are stunning. If I didn’t know better, I would have thought that this was an original idea and the mechanics were made for this game.

One thing I like about this game is how often the special features activate. When a game revolves around its features, the worst thing would be if you couldn’t ever get to them. This does mean that the volatility is medium and the wins are lower, but I do think it is better this way.

I do recommend that you give this slot a go. It’s well worth your time and is a perfect slot for December. If you happen to like it, you can go and play Chronos Joker in January when you’ve had enough of Christmas.
