Would you dare to spend a night in a haunted hospital? If you’re unsure, then try Haunted Hospital the slot game by Wazdan instead! It’s the perfect way to see if your pants stay clean – if not, then maybe it’s best to stay at home.

You’re standing in front of an old hospital building. It’s late at night and pouring, and you flinch when the lightning strikes and illuminates the white, deteriorated walls. Suddenly, you spot someone standing on the roof. He’s swaying on his feet and looks like he’s wearing a restraining jacket! As you blink again, he’s gone. Or, maybe your eyes are just tired and playing tricks. Bracing yourself, you step inside and hear the echo of the water dripping from your clothes. There’s nothing to be afraid of, the ghost stories are just legends – aren’t they?

Wazdan really did well with Haunted Hospital. I’m particularly happy to see how much they’re giving power to the players to change their experience. By selecting a lite mode you can make the game run smoothly even with a slower connection, you can make the reels go ultra-fast and adjust the ambient sounds and SFX separately. But, that’s not all – you can even select the volatility between low, medium and high.

So, this makes Haunted Hospital one of the best-tailored game there currently is, or from what I know of. Together with such an interesting theme, Haunted Hospital is truly one of a kind.

Graphics and sound

Despite a bit cheap graphics and the worn-out, horror-themed font, the game does not lack in ambience and humour. The game is set inside the hospital (of course), where you are standing in a hallway under a flickering light. Sometimes you may see a shadowy hand creeping up on you and sometimes you’re certain you just saw glowing eyes behind the broken window.

Also, you can see lots of blood everywhere. So yeah, a few red flags here and there that you should maybe leave and never come back.

The animation and the music are just right for this game. With the winning spins, you get to meet the poor souls trapped inside the building where they met their horrible fates. But, they’re not the only ones you should be afraid of. A crazy doctor is still doing his experiments deep within the facility, and he has several minions lurking in the shadows.

I loved the ambient music and listened to it while writing this review. It’s something I could very well listen to while reading a horror story in a dark room. The graphics might be a bit cheap-side and make the game look older than it is, but they work just as well.

Symbols and wins

Haunted Hospital has three reels, three rows and 27 paylines going from left to right.

High-paying symbols:

  • 3 x doctor pay 160x your bet (is also Wild)
  • 3 x chemist pay 80x your bet
  • 3 x slasher pay 40x your bet

Low-paying symbols:

  • 3 x cleaner or nurse pay 8x your bet
  • 3 x hospital, wheelchair or bed pay 4x your bet
  • 3 x syringe, scalpel or saw pay 2x your bet
  • 3 x brain, hand or eyes pay 1x your bet

Special symbols:

  • Wild: The doctor substitutes all other symbols except Mystery and Scatter.
  • Mystery: Three Mystery symbols trigger the mystery win.
  • Scatter: Three Scatters activate the free spins.

Features

  • Double up: You can try to multiply your wins by choosing this instead of payout after every win or after free spins are over.

If you’re playing at a normal or fast speed, you’ll get a mini-game of selecting the right door.

If you choose the right door, you double your current winnings. But, if you open the wrong door you lose everything. Behind the right door is a beautiful nurse standing in a sunny field. Behind the wrong door, you get attacked by a knife-wielding man.

While playing at an ultra-fast speed you get to guess the colour of a card by selecting red or black pill.

Both mini-games have 7 stages.

  • Mystery: Landing three Mystery symbols pay instantly 1-500x your bet.
  • Free spins: Landing three Scatter symbols you win 9 free spins.

The free spins are similar to the main game spins. It’s possible to re-trigger the free spins by landing three new Scatters.

  • Volatility: Adjust the volatility of your game.

With low volatility, you can win more frequently but the wins are usually smaller. With high volatility, you can win bigger but the winning spins are more scarce.

  • Game mode: Select normal, fast or ultra-fast speed to play the game as slow or as fast as you want.

Final Thoughts

Haunted Hospital was a delight to play. However, not just because of the theme (I love horror!), but because of the exciting freedom of changing the game style and volatility. The best part being, you can change the volatility with every spin, if you’d like.

Haunted Hospital has the kind of sweet charm that speaks to me, and no doubt to most fans of horror. I love the small details, like the IV hanging from the game frame, and the play buttons being sharp saw blades.

On the other hand, the special features like Mystery and free spins were a bit disappointing. The mystery wasn’t anything more than a random win, and the free spins don’t have anything special about them. No additional multiplier, nothing. So, even though I enjoyed the interesting graphics of the free spin mode, it didn’t leave me wanting more of the same.

While Haunted Hospital is a fun-looking slot filled with scary ambience, in a long run it falls quite short with the features. However, this makes it a good game for beginners as well as those looking for the extra thrills.
