Happy Halloween takes a tradition that is usually associated with darkness and scary sights, and gives them a lighthearted twist! Let’s see if a Happy Halloween is really what brings colour to this holiday.

Developed by Play ‘n GO and released in 2015, this slot has been out for a while. When it first came out I enjoyed my time playing it, based on a combination of the excellent graphics and the largely familiar game experience. Now is the time to revisit it and see how it holds up!

As the name implies, the game is set during Halloween but is not seeking to scare us. Instead, all the images are based on scariness but toned down a lot. Think of the Addam’s Family as a reference. You’ll see images that are usually associated with horror, like ghosts and Frankenstein’s Monster, but made a lot cuter.

Obviously, Halloween is a popular topic for slots and there are others that you can try out if you’re in a scary mood. In 2017, Microgaming released the movie-based Halloween slot, which incorporates images and scenes from the original movie. Then there are slots like The Dark Joker Rizes and Mythic Maiden that aren’t directly connected to Halloween but do use a lot of scary imagery to get you in the right mood!

Happy Halloween uses hand-drawn symbols to populate the 5-reel, 4-row playing field with a total of 50 paylines. These are all beautiful to look at, as well as fitting the style very well. The background puts us in a dark forest with an old mansion in the background. The different symbols are subtly animated when they’re part of a payline.

The music does things a little different, combining the usual spooky sounds with a more cheery take. You’ll feel in the mood for scary things while not actually being overly scared. The different sound effects meanwhile evoke older horror movies.

Symbols

All the symbols in this game are original and hand-drawn. Some include certain types of fruit to allude to classic slots but they’re made to include Halloween imagery. I thought they still look amazing.

The symbols are from highest to lowest:

  • Witch (Scatter): Get 3 or more on the screen to activate the free spins mode. It also pays 4x total bet.
  • Ghost: Win max. 1,000 coins with five-of-a-kind on a winning payline.
  • Frankenstein’s Monster: Win max. 500 coins with five-of-a-kind on a winning payline.
  • Countess: Win max. 500 coins with five-of-a-kind on a winning payline.
  • Mummy: Win max. 400 coins with five-of-a-kind on a winning payline.
  • Young Witch: Win max. 400 coins with five-of-a-kind on a winning payline.
  • Strawberry: Win max. 400 coins with five-of-a-kind on a winning payline.
  • Cookie: Win max. 400 coins with five-of-a-kind on a winning payline.
  • Grapes: Win max. 200 coins with five-of-a-kind on a winning payline.
  • Apple: Win max. 200 coins with five-of-a-kind on a winning payline.
  • Ghost: Win max. 200 coins with five-of-a-kind on a winning payline.
  • Orange: Win max. 200 coins with five-of-a-kind on a winning payline.
  • Pumpkin (Wild): Substitutes all other symbols in the game except the Scatter.

All the symbols are drawn in a style that reminded me of comic books, with a lot of colours. Coupled with the beautiful background it created a sense of style without becoming too overbearing.

Happy Halloween slot wilds feature

Features

Although Happy Halloween stays close to the classic slot experience, it does add a few features to spice up the gameplay.

  • Wilds: The slot randomly adds Wilds to the base game that substitutes all other symbols in the game except Scatter Symbols. The Wilds themselves have no value.
  • Multiplier: When 3 Scatter symbols appear on the screen at the same time, they award a win with 4x your bet.
  • Free Spins: Getting 3 Scatter symbols on the screen at the same time triggers the Free Spins mode with 10 free spins. It’s possible to retrigger the Scattery symbols one additional time, adding another 10 free spins up to a maximum of 20 free spins.
  • Stacked Wilds: During Free Spins mode, the game adds random stacks of Wilds on reel 2, 3, 4 and 5. These don’t always appear.

The Free Spins mode triggered quite often for me but doesn’t add much to the base gameplay. The biggest change is the Stacked Wilds that can be added to the playing field. They aren’t really added to the screen as much as they’re part of the reels. The reels might stop with them on the field, but they also might not.

In my experience, they don’t show up too often but when they do it’s usually for a big win. Compared to the base game, this is a sizable change.

Conclusion

Happy Halloween is a slot that gives a lot of character to a theme that can be taken a few different ways. Going for something more positive or lighthearted is a nice twist to the formula and the way this game does it definitely works well.

I loved the graphics of the game, especially since they remind me of the comic-book style I grew up with. The music is very involved, with a lot of sound and effects that really double down on the Halloween setting.

The game has High Volatility which translated for me in the fact that the base game didn’t hold very many wins, but the free spins mode was lucrative. I thought it was good that it triggered semi-regularly. I never saw my funds dip too low for comfort. Meanwhile, the ability to choose a bet between $0.01 and $100 meant I was free to decide for myself how risky I wanted to play it. The prospect of a max. win of 10,000x your bet was definitely reason enough to keep going!

If you’re like me and enjoy a classic slot with some additional features, built on a great theme with fitting looks and a pleasant soundtrack I would recommend Happy Halloween. The game does a lot of things right that make it a good time to spend playing.
