Flowers takes place in an overgrown garden where different plants make a mess and maybe grant me some winning paylines!

This slot was released in 2013 which makes it one of the older games in the Netent stable. Where some of their slots stand apart for their attention to detail or interesting game mechanics, Flowers is one of those slots that really doesn’t do anything special and because of that always stays relevant.

If you’re looking for a game that has amazing graphics, an award-worthy soundtrack or features that will turn your life around, Flowers is simply not for you. Instead, this 5-reel, 3-row slot with 30 paylines is a solid down-to-earth game that will appeal to most players simply because of its basic gameplay.

As the title tells us, Flowers makes a series of different flowers our symbols. The background shows us we’re in the middle of a garden and we can only assume the type of flower politics taking place with this wide variety of fauna!

The graphics are acceptable. Each flower symbol is hand-drawn and distinct. The flowers all have character, some looking happy or silly, others angry or scheming. Add to that their unique colours and it’s easy to tell them apart.

There isn’t much to go on in regards to sound. The only sound you’ll hear will be a thump when the reels stop spinning and a short riff when there is a winning payline. When 2 or more Free Spins symbols appear on the screen you’ll hear a slide-whistle that can either peter out or turn into a song depending on getting the third symbol.

All in all, Flowers looked to me like a generic slot. I must’ve played it all those years ago but it is difficult to remember a game like this when so many newer and more memorable slots have been released in the meantime. Especially considering Netent developed it, I would have hoped for some more creativity.

Flowers Highlights

  • Multiplier: In Flowers, the winnings can be multiplied by different multiplier mechanisms.
  • Stacked wilds: Stacked wilds appear as a tall column and create winning combinations across the reel.
  • Freespins: You can get in-game free spins in Flowers.
  • Wilds: Wilds substitute any standard symbol and help create more winning combinations.
  • Volatility: This high volatility slot has big, less frequent wins.

Symbols

The Flowers’ symbols can be divided into two categories, the low-paying card symbols and the high-paying flower symbols. The low-paying symbols are the generic Ace and King types, with a flat font and no special consideration to the setting.

The high-paying flower symbols have some more personality and were created specifically for this slot. They look okay but they are not animated but are simple flat images. Each flower symbol has 2 variations, those with 1 flower and with 2 flowers on them. These decide the bonus you get, as a winning payline with 5 symbols with 2 flowers on them will count as a ten-of-a-kind payline.

From highest to lowest the symbols are:

  • Free Spins: Receive up to 30 free spins. Get 4 or more Free Spins symbols on the screen at the same time to active Free Spins mode.
  • Wild: Wilds substitute all other symbols in the game, except Free Spins and doubles. Max. 5000 coins with five-of-a-kind on a winning payline.
  • Rose: Max. 2000 coins with ten-of-a-kind on a winning payline.
  • Sunflower: Max. 1800 coins with ten-of-a-kind on a winning payline.
  • Fly-eater: Max. 1600 coins with ten-of-a-kind on a winning payline.
  • Tulip: Max. 1400 coins with ten-of-a-kind on a winning payline.
  • Bell Flower: Max. 1200 coins with ten-of-a-kind on a winning payline.
  • Ace: Max. 200 coins with five-of-a-kind on a winning payline.
  • King: Max. 150 coins with five-of-a-kind on a winning payline.
  • Queen: Max. 125 coins with five-of-a-kind on a winning payline.
  • Jack: Max. 100 coins with five-of-a-kind on a winning payline.

As you might have been able to tell, there are quite a few symbols that use the fact that the symbols appear with either 1 or 2 on the picture. Even the Free Spins symbol can have 1 or 2 clouds on them. For the purpose of the Free Spins mode, this matters. If you only get 2 Free Spins symbols at the same time, but they both have 2 clouds on them, this will trigger the Free Spins mode!

I have to admit that during my time playing I didn’t notice this organically. It’s only when I dove into the Information screen to see the maximum win for each symbol that I found out. It’s definitely the most unique aspect of this slot because I don’t think I’ve ever seen that mechanic used before.

Features

Flowers is a simple slot and that also shows in the features. Not that there aren’t any, or that they don’t add to the experience. If you’re looking for a game that keeps things easy, Flowers fits the bill.

  • Free Spins: As normal, get a set number of free spins symbols on the screen at the same time and it activates Free Spins mode. Keep in mind that the number of clouds on each Free Spins symbol is counted, and not the symbols themselves.
  • Stacked Wilds: Wilds substitute all other symbols in the game except Free Spins and doubles. When they replace a flower symbol, they will only count as 1. In Free Spins mode, Wilds can appear as Stacked Wilds on a reel.
  • Multipliers: Depending on the number of Free Spins symbols you get before activating the Free Spins mode, the higher your multiplier can be.
  • Double Symbols: The Free Spins and flower symbols can have either 1 or 2 characters on them. The game will count the characters and not the symbols to determine paylines. That means only 2 symbols can be enough for a winning payline.

I found the features to work quite well together, even if there aren’t too many. The most interesting one is the double symbols. They make it possible to get a winning payline with only 2 symbols, but at the same time getting the max. win payline a lot harder since you not only need 5 symbols on the winning payline but they also all need to have 2 flowers on them.

The Free Spins also work according to this mechanic. It means you can activate the Free Spins mode with only 2 Free Spins and you can get up to 10 Free Spins symbols on the screen at the same time. These can also appear during the Free Spins mode and depending on how many, they can add more Free Spins or extra multipliers. The maximum you can get is 30 free spins and a 10x multiplier.

Conclusion

Flowers is a very basic slot in a lot of ways. It has everything you expect from a classic game without being too simple. The graphics are basic but nice, the soundtrack is barely existent but not annoying.

The different features also play on this. With a High Volatility, it depends on getting double symbols to get big wins. I had quite a lot of trouble getting the Free Spins mode to activate but once it did, it usually paid off. The best that can happen is a max. win of 15000x your bet!

The game offers all the expected features as well, Autoplay and Quick Spin being the main ones. You can set your bet between $0.30 and $75 per spin.

Fans of simple but sturdy slots that stay close to the core gameplay will probably like this game. There isn’t a whole lot to explore or look at, but if you’re just in the mood for something to dive into and play for a while, you can’t go wrong with this one either.
