The Faces of Freya is a slot that is designed around the enigmatic and mysterious Freya, goddess of love and war in Norse mythology. The game further features wilds, multipliers, a bonus game, and free spins.

This slot was developed and released by Play ‘n GO, a studio that has been hard at work delivering quality slots for a good while now. This game came out in 2021 and is a good indicator of where their priorities lie. The graphics are great, with a lot of attention to detail. The background shows us Freya’s lands, the heavenly field Folkvang where she receives half of those who died in battle. The image shows us a serene lake with a building in the centre surrounded by lush fields.

The images in the slot are all related to Freya or her myths. We can see different animals and items that count for the high-paying symbols while card suits in runic form are used to represent the low-paying symbols. Even though they are card suits, the designers did a good job making them look like Nordic runes and fit the style of the game. When it comes to animations, the player will be in for a treat. There are birds flying in the background while the high-paying symbols have subtle animations when part of a win.

Playing the game, players are confined mostly to the 5-reel, 3-row playing field with a standard 20 win lines. The game does adjust the presentation of the game as the free spins mode is activated and the player progresses through a series of screens. This will all still happen on the same playing field, however.

Symbols

The Faces of Freya features a rather average number of different features. Although the playing field isn’t any bigger than other classic slots, the standard number of paylines and the different features make it a bit easier to get a win. As a result, the game is listed as Medium Volatility which fit my experience. The player will be granted frequent smaller wins and the occasional bigger win.

While I played the slot, my funds hovered around the starting point, only slightly dipping lower as time went on. Bigger wins aren’t very easy to get since the free spins mode is more volatile than the rest of the game, but they are definitely attainable. Players who want to get a taste of the volatility or those who like to increase or decrease their risk can pick a bet they prefer. The game lets choose a bet between $0.20 and $100 per spin.

Although the slot has medium volatility, the max. win is 5,000x your bet which you would normally only find on slots with higher volatility. In that regard, it offers an above-average reward. Having said that, do keep in mind that the volatility of a slot is not an indication of how easy it is to get the jackpot.

The symbols in the game include:

  • Scatter: Get 3 or more Scatters on the screen to activate the free spins mode.
  • Wild: Max. 20x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Torc: Max. 17.5x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Large Cats: Max. 15x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Boar: Max. 12.5x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Shield and Axe: Max. 10x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Spade: Max. 5x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Heart: Max. 5x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Club: Max. 2.5x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Diamond: Max. 2.5x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.

Features

The features in The Faces of Freya are not difficult to understand on the surface but their implementation is quite complicated. Most of the game revolves around the Fields of Freya, which trigger different types of free spins with different features.

  • Wilds: Wilds substitute all regular symbols in the game, except the Scatter symbol.
  • Multiplier: Multipliers are active during the Folkvang – War section of the game. Win multipliers start at 2x and can increase to up to 20x.
  • Random Wilds: Folkvang – Love will add random wilds to the screen every spin.
  • Free Spins: Get 3 or more scatters on the screen to activate the free spins mode. Players receive 6 free spins. With only 2 scatters, a random free spins mode is activated for 1 spin.

There are four free spins modes, namely Love, War, Sorcery and Finale. When activating the free spins mode, players will go through each mode until they reach Finale. After this is completed, the total winnings are awarded. Each mode has its own feature, including random wilds, a multiplier and a random symbol changed into the Boar symbol. These features culminate in the Finale, where they are all active at the same time.

If you only get 2 Scatters on the screen the game will randomly activate one of the three modes, Love, War or Sorcery, and play them for one spin. This will not be available for any more spins as it is not possible to trigger re-spins.

I thought this was incredibly complex and very badly explained in the paytable. I had to read through it multiple times and then play the game to see what was happening in order for me to get a grasp of the way it works. When it does work, it seems to be quite good at generating big wins so it continues to be something to try and activate.

Conclusion

The Faces of Freya is a slot that dives deep into the lore and myths that revolve around this character, even though her exact background will likely not be familiar to most people. Even though she has a familiar name, I had to read up on her to see the connections. I appreciate that the creators put a lot of thought into the setting, showing it off in the art and the names of the different features.

I didn’t think they did such a good job with the features. The features themselves are fine if a bit messy, but the way they are explained is terribly convoluted and confusing. I know from personal experience how difficult it is to explain a feature when showing it will be much simpler, but the way the paytable describes it made me more confused.

The upside here is that the player is not required to make any choices concerning the features. Just playing the game will automatically trigger a free spins mode, and the results are going to be presented to you regardless of your understanding of how they work. With that stipulation, you can start spinning and see how it feels.
