Introduction

Spring Tails is a fun Asain-themed slot by Betsoft that offers smaller stakes but massive multipliers. Built in a simple 5×3 formation, this game isn’t particularly innovative or stand-out. However, it does bring a good bit of joy and relaxation to anyone who gives it the time of day. If you’re a player who enjoys the process and doesn’t bet big, then this is right up your street. Just don’t expect to have frequent wins.

Theme and Graphics

Spring Tails is another Asian-influenced slot from Betsoft and this is apparent throughout the game from its soundtrack to the symbols. The game was released in 2020 to celebrate the Chinese New Year, which fell on the Chinese Zodiac’s year of the rat.

From the moment you open the game the oriental influences are abundant within and around the 5×3 reels. The background is packed with little details that create a lovely external environment – you really feel like you’re in a Chinese village in the mountains. In the bottom corner of the reels is the lucky rat which you’ll see scurrying across the top of the buttons from time to time. Betsoft has even added a nice little animation to his tail, head and eyes which really bring him to life. A great little partner to have with you when experiencing Spring Tails.

As you would expect with a Betsoft slot, the graphics are incredibly crisp and the colours are vibrant even though it is not an overly modern-looking/innovative game. The soundtrack, as with many Asain-themed games, makes you feel as if you have been transported to a village somewhere in rural China. It’s calm, soothing, and damn right catchy. Absolutely nothing negative to say about that little tune!

Features

Lucky Rat Wilds: Random multipliers with big potential

The little rat that runs across the bottom of the reels during the game is also a wild symbol. These wilds can appear on reels 2, 3 and 4. Each wild carries its own random multiplier that ranges between 3x, 4x and 5x. What’s even more exciting about the lucky rat wilds is that the random multipliers attached can stock up to as much as 60x!. These little fellas really can and do boost your wins quite considerably.

Golden Key Free Spins: Land 3 on 3 reels

Golden Keys are the scatter symbols in Spring Tails. Just like the wilds, you need to land three golden keys on reels 2 3 & 4 to trigger the free spins round. However, unlike the wilds, the golden keys must land on all three reels. Do this, and you will unlock the temple of free spins. In this sacred place, all of the lowest value symbols are removed meaning only high-paying symbols are available!. This really is a brilliant little touch and goes a long way at making the free spins mode worthwhile.

Buy Feature: Free spins when you can’t wait

If you can’t be bothered to stick with it and spin the reels. Then Spring Tails have given you another way to potentially win big. The feature allows players to buy into the free spins round with 12 free spins. Depending on your bet amount the cost of this does vary. For example, with a $1 bet, the buy feature would cost $58. Is it a risk worth taking? Well for me it wasn’t as I only won back $55.80. But who knows, maybe you’ll be luckier?

Bets and Payouts

There’s a real mix of symbols in this game that represent wealth and prosperity, plus a few rodent favourites. These range from golden ornaments and jewels to peanuts and cheese. See below for how much they pay:

  • Golden Ornaments – Pays 5,000x for 5 on a payline
  • Jewels – Pays 120x for 5 on a payline
  • Pearl – Pays 60x for 5 on a payline
  • Rice Sack – Pays 20x for 5 on a payline
  • Peanut – Pays 15x for 5 on a payline
  • Cheese – Pays 12x for 5 on a payline
  • A & K symbols – Pays 8x for 5 on a payline
  • Q & J symbols – Pays 6x for 5 on a payline

Spring Tails might be built in a simple 5×3 reel formation and have only 5 paylines, but don’t let that fool you. This slot packs some serious potential. The max win is a whopping 300,364x! However, the game comes with relatively small bet sizes, ranging from $0.05 to $0.50 which equates to $150,182. Not bad for a $0.50 spin!

Spring Tails is highly volatile with 95.90% RTP and you really get a sense of that when playing the game. Don’t expect to trigger the free spins round in a few goes, you’re better off expecting to get through circa 150 spins before that.

Conclusion

Spring Tails is a fun game to play and I certainly enjoyed my time giving it a whirl. Its simplicity means you know exactly what you’re getting, with no complicated combinations or features. The graphics are crisp and the soundtrack is top-notch. As someone who is a smaller bettor, this game appealed to my gameplay more and if you’re like me then you won’t be disappointed. Just don’t expect to hit those wins on the regular!
