Smash up those crystals and expand your playfield. This is an explosive slot with big wins and very high volatility.

Poprocks is a slot developed by Avatar UX and released by Yggdrasil in the spring of 2020. It is a great-looking slot with interesting features, which is what Yggdrasil’s own slots are also known for. It is also the first slot in the Avatar UX’s Popwins series.

Poprocks has a surprisingly large amount of features. They are all so well designed and intertwined that you won’t even notice that some things are actually multiple features working together. This is always a sign of great design work and Avatar UX did an amazing job with the mechanics.

So, what can you expect with Poprocks? You are in for an exciting ride, as this is a high-volatility slot with big swings. Pop those rocks, expand the reels and get ready to blow this powder keg sky-high.

Graphics and sound

Poprocks is simply a beautiful game. It has vibrant colours, clean user-interface, nice symbols and everything is easy to understand. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said about the theme of the game.

The idea is that you crack the rocks and reveal even better crystals as you go. This has been then linked with a Japanese twist by adding dragons to the rocks and using a Japanese-styled font on some symbols. To mix things up a bit, there is also a fantasy-themed castle in the background and the columns on the sides have Germanic ornaments.

Sound design is much more coherent, though a bit forgettable. The music is calm and etheric, which plays well with the crystal theme. What I would have wanted to hear is a bit more energy when the game gets going. You can have a wild round with massive wins and the music is still just as subtle as it always was.

Symbols and wins

Poprocks has a lot of symbols, but at least you don’t need to worry about all kinds of special symbols. There are a total of 15 different symbols and a wild is the only odd one out.

The symbols are divided into four tiers: low, medium, high and super high. When you spin the reels, you will only get symbols from the two lowest tiers. The high-tier symbols are only available through Pops.

Pops are what this game is all about. The Popwins feature is a clever combination of Cascading Wins and Megaways. Your winning combinations are removed from the reels and the reels themselves will expand. You have every possible payline available from left to right and right to left, and Pops will also increase your multiplier. It’s a lot, but it all works together.

Your goal is to chain up as many wins as you can. The longer you can keep playing, the better it gets. You get more paylines, better symbols, bigger multipliers and in the end, even wilds. Just keep the spin going for as long as you can and you’re golden.

The problem with the game is that all the regular wins are tiny. You need at least high-tier symbols to win you bet back with three symbols. This is to be expected in a game like this, but it’s still not fun.

I do need to mention that this is not a slot for those who want a calm and easy slot. This is a high-volatility game that goes all out. There is a potential for high wins, but the risks are very high.

Features

Win Both Ways: Win from left to right and vice versa

You can win either from left to right or from right to left. This is normally a nice feature, but here it is especially great. It plays really well with Popwins feature allowing you to easily expand all of the reels, and not just those on the left.

Popwins: Cascade and expand at the same time

Popwins is a really interesting feature that combines the best of Megaways and Cascading Wins. Every symbol in a winning combination is removed from the field and replaced with a new symbol. This will also expand those reels.

Every winning chain, or a Pop, creates more spaces on the reels. You start off with three rows, but can increase it all the way up to seven. If you expand every reel, you have 33,614 paylines. This will also activate the Unlock Wild feature, which will add wild symbols to the game.

Improving Symbols: Best symbols are not available right away

When you spin the reels, you can only get low and medium symbols. The high and super high symbols can only show up after you get a Pop.

The high symbols are worth about double compared to the mediums and the super high is about twice as valuable as the high symbols. The super high symbol does have an ace up its sleeve, as five of them are worth 100x your bet.

Win Multipliers: The more you win, the better the multiplier is

Every time you create a winning combination, all of the symbols are collected. The column on the left shows how many you need to increase your multiplier. Your multiplier is increased by one for every seven symbols. If you have Unlock Wild activated, then you increase it by two.

Final Thoughts

This was a wild ride. It is no surprise that a slot with these features is volatile, but this was something special. I had to deal with a lot of empty spins, but when I hit something, that something was big.

Poprocks is made for those players who want to go all in. The game is full of excitement and suspense, and the best part is that it’s all in the base game. You don’t need to activate any special features to get a good win.

I am looking forward to seeing what kind of games will be released in the Popwins series. The concept is great and the features were innovative, so perhaps this is going to be a good competitor to Megaways slots.
