Safari Sam 2 is the logical successor of the original Safari Sam, and again we follow this intrepid explorer into the heart of Africa as he seeks to find the wildlife there. The game comes with a free spins mode, stacked wilds and scatter symbols.

This Betsoft game is the 2021 sequel to the first slot with the same name, and we can see a return of Sam as the titular character. Instead of a nondescript wild girl that we only see as a single symbol, Sam is now accompanied by a female explorer who might be a journalist or just another discoverer standing on the opposite side of the screen. There is also a change in the appearance of the game. Where the original used the now-outdated 3D graphics, this slot has everything hand-drawn.

There are quite a few animations that help with the immersion, including small ones like Sam and the woman standing next to the 5-reel, 3-row playing field and simply blinking and breathing. Other animations are a bit more involved, like Sam grasping his rifle or whenever there’s a special win. Unfortunately, most of the symbols themselves aren’t animated but we can’t have everything!

The slot comes with a standard 20 paylines which might not seem like much but there are some instances where wins are calculated slightly differently. This helps in creating wins, and as a result, the slot is listed as Medium Volatility which fit my experience. Don’t expect a steady supply of wins but you won’t be starved either.

Symbols

Safari Sam 2 is clearly set in Africa and as such has a lot of symbols related to this setting. You can expect to see some different animals as well as Sam and the journalist. Unfortunately, this time the developers decided to fill the reels with card letters. There’s inherently nothing wrong with that but it takes me out of the setting. I do like that they tried to give these letters a design that somewhat fits the African theme.

Getting wins isn’t particularly easy but it does happen during the base game quite frequently. The payouts for these vary from small to medium. If you are looking for a big win, you’ll probably need to go to another slot. Safari Sam 2 only features a maximum win of 500x your bet. That’s a small jackpot for even a slot with low volatility, so it is well below what you’d normally get in a slot like this one.

If you’re still interested in getting a bigger win it’s always possible to choose a bet between $0.20 and $100 per spin, which makes even a regular win potentially large. However, most players will want to stay on the smaller side of that range. When I was playing this game, keeping my bets small allowed me to play for longer and increase the chance that I’d trigger the free spins mode.

When it comes to the symbols, the following ones are present in the game:

  • Acacia Tree (Scatter): With 3 or more Acacia Trees on the screen the free spins mode is activated. Players can receive up to 50x their bet and 20 free spins.
  • Compass (Wild): Wilds substitute all symbols except the Scatter. Max. 10x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Safari Sam: Max. 10x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Journalist: Max. 8x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Lion: Max. 4x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Zebra: Max. 3.5x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Jeep: Max. 3x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Camp: Max. 2.5x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Ace: Max. 1.5x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • King: Max. 1.25x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Queen: Max. 1.25x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Jack: Max. 1x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.

Safari Sam 2 Features

Safari Sam 2 keeps things light when it comes to the features, only including a standard selection. I did find them quite entertaining, however, so players shouldn’t worry about getting bored.

The features include:

  • Wilds: Wilds substitute all regular symbols in the game, except the Scatter symbol.
  • Stacked Wilds: Wilds can appear Stacked, filling the entire reel.
  • Cascading Reels: When Wilds appear Stacked they will pay out a three-of-a-kind win and be removed, making room for new symbols. Any new wins that are created this way are paid out as normal. During the free spins mode, new symbols are guaranteed to be Wilds.
  • Call of the Wild: During the base game, it can randomly fill up to 4 reels with Stacked Wilds.
  • Free Spins: With 3 or more Scatter symbols on the screen, the Free Spins mode is activated. Players can receive up to 20 free spins this way. During free spins mode, every spin has Call of the Wild activated.

I thought the base game was a rather simple affair with only the Call of the Wild being a really interesting feature. Unfortunately, it also seemed somewhat biased at creating Stacked Wilds on reels 4 and 5, making it unlikely they will be aiding in creating any wins. If they had been more evenly placed across the screen I think they would have been more useful.

Looking at the paytable, the free spins mode is meant to be the most helpful when it comes to creating bigger wins. Not only does it trigger the Call of the Wild feature every spin, it will also replace any Stacked Symbols with Stacked Wilds when they occur. The big problem with that was that the free spins mode was extremely hard to trigger when I played the slot.

Conclusion

Safari Sam 2 is a worthy successor to the original, keeping the character intact while also bringing it into the new decade. The graphics are crisp and well-done, mixing the old design with a more cartoony look. I think it works well and helps keep the slot relevant.

The gameplay is close to a standard slot with the expected features present. There are some elements that the game changes from the status quo, most notably the cascading reels when they are stacked. This was also a feature in the first game so it makes sense the developer brought it along.

I would have liked to have seen the free spins mode be a bit easier to get into but considering the advantages this gives, it makes sense it will take players a while to activate. I thought this game was a lot of fun and definitely a great example of a sequel done well.
