Rudolph’s Ride lets us take a peek into the snow-covered Santa’s workshop, filled with reindeer, elves and gifts. There must be something in there for us!
This Christmas-themed slot was developed by Booming Games and released in 2018, giving us the usual 5-reel, 3-row playing field we’ve gotten used to with a respectable 20 paylines. All of this dressed up in a rather beautiful Christmas atmosphere!
The symbols are all original and created with a sense of whimsy and youthfulness which really fits the theme of course. There are a lot of tiny details in the symbols as well. I liked how there are little card suits integrated into the stockings, which is proof to me how it’s possible to incorporate these symbols into a setting correctly!
When it comes to the music, it’s obviously a rather chipper sounding Christmas song that has some familiar sounds but doesn’t perfectly fit any existing songs. Nevertheless, it did put me in the Christmas mood! Any wins you get are accentuated with a happy jingle.
All the symbols in Rudolph’s Ride are original, with the lower-paying symbols being stockings and the high-paying symbols different Christmas characters. They’re all easily distinguishable which makes it quick to see when there’s a winning payline.
From highest to lowest they are:
The game has a High Volatility which I found pretty accurate with my time playing. It also explains the rather high coin value of the wins, since they aren’t as frequent.
Rudolph’s Ride doesn’t step too far out of Booming Games’ comfort zone when it comes to the features, offering the rather standard selection that a lot of their other slots also have:
I found most of the features to stay in the background, the stacked symbols not really appearing in any meaningful way. The Wilds do show up regularly and help in getting a win but not really any more than in any other slot.
The biggest surprise for me was the Free Spins mode. Activating it is straight-forward: get 3 Scatter Symbols on the screen at the same time to activate the Free Spins mode. This will give us a new background and a quick information screen before we get started!
We begin with 8 free spins but it is relatively common for the Free Spins to re-trigger, meaning we get another 3 Scatter Symbols. First, it will use the remaining free spins we started with but then it will transfer the mode into level 2. This means we get another 8 free spins but as the mode is now at level 2, we also get a 2x multiplier on all wins during the free spins.
It is possible to get to level 3, which requires another set of Scatter Symbols to appear. When this happens it will again spend the remaining free spins first before switching over to level 3. Now there is a 3x multiplier for the remaining spins. It can’t re-trigger again during Level 3 and there is no higher multiplier either.
I thought it was an interesting mechanic and it plays itself out. There is a little tracker at the top of the screen that informs you at which level you are at now. During my time playing, I found it rather hard to get into level 2 and it was impossible to get to level 3, even though the requirements aren’t very high. I think that it is just as likely to get Scatter Symbols during the free spins mode as it is during the base game so don’t expect any miracles.
Rudolph’s Ride is a fun Christmas-themed slot that offers players a wonderful setting in which to play. The developers put a lot of attention to the various details, from the backgrounds to the symbols and the soundtrack. I had no trouble getting immersed even though it’s still months from winter while I write this!
The features are decent even though there aren’t that many, giving the slot a bit of a unique style besides its appearance. It is a simple but effective combination of features, where my biggest question marks are with the stacked symbols since they seem to contribute to wins the least.
Players have the opportunity to choose a bet between $0.20 and $200 per spin. Considering the high volatility I found a lower bet amount to be the safest choice but it’s also a rather difficult estimation to make. The max. win of 2,400x your bet is pretty good, especially compared to other Booming Games slots.
