Huge Catch shows us the life of a fisherman as he enjoys his time on the water trying to get a catch, using Multipliers, Pays Both Ways and Free Spins to do it with! Players can join the man on his boat and enjoy their time as they watch the reels spin.

Developed by new developer Mancala Gaming, Huge Catch was released in 2020 making it one of the newest slots out there. The game looks the part with sharp, crisp symbols and plenty of animations. The 5-reel, 4-row playing field is big enough to show its symbols while also keeping some room for a background. There we see the fisherman on his boat, spending his time on the lake fishing.

Everything has a nice cartoony feel to it with a lot of exaggerated shapes and enough detail to make it look interesting. When there is a win on one of the 25 paylines the game dims the other symbols and shows the complete payline, but there aren’t a lot of animations in any of the symbols. Getting a scatter symbol will show 5 cards the player can pick from but these too aren’t animated very much.

Huge Catch Symbols

The game features a selection of high- and low-paying symbols that are all drawn in a nice clear way. The high-paying symbols are either based on fish or things you might fish up, the low-paying symbols are card letters. These haven’t had as much creativity applied to them but their distinct colours help them stand apart.

Huge Catch has a Low Volatility which I didn’t find quite as apparent. Over time I felt like I was steadily losing funds and never really went above my starting funds. Even with a lower bet between $0.25 and $22.25, it looked like it was mostly just a steady decline.

The symbols that are being used here are:

  • Crate: The Crate triggers the bonus game, letting players pick between 1 of 5 crates for a special bonus.
  • Free Spins: 3 or more Free Spins symbols on the screen triggers the Free Spins mode.
  • Wild: WIlds substitute all other symbols in the game.
  • Carp: Max. 250x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Catfish: Max. 200x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Piranha: Max. 175x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Goldfish: Max. 150x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Ace: Max. 70x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • King: Max. 60x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Queen: Max. 50x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Jack: Max. 40x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.

Features

Huge Catch doesn’t rely on too many features and the ones it does have are what you’d expect. They also function the same way as they do in other slots, so people who are familiar with slots will be able to jump in immediately.

  • Wilds: Wilds substitute all other symbols in the game.
  • Pays Both Ways: Paylines are counted both from left to right and vice versa.
  • Free Spins: Get 3 or more Scatter symbols on the screen to activate the Free Spins mode.
  • Bonus Game: With the Bonus symbol, players get to pick 1 of 5 crates to unveil a coin win or free spins.

The base game plays rather quickly with a simple gameplay loop. The pays both ways feature was pretty obvious in creating wins and sometimes combined nicely with the regular wins from left to right. I didn’t get a lot of longer wins though, with the four and five-of-a-kind wins being pretty rare.

The Crate symbol was rather frequent as well and as it only required one to activate the bonus game it could trigger often. I had them even appear back to back at times, although that wasn’t a regular occurrence.

Getting a Crate would let me pick 1 of 5 crates which hide either a coin win or free spins. Picking the coin win just awards it as normal while getting the free spins will automatically start the free spins mode. In fact, this proved to be the most reliable way to get to this mode as I found it very hard to get 3 or more Free Spins symbols on the screen at all.

During more than 2 hours of playing, I don’t think I triggered the Free Spins mode organically more than twice. All other times, it was because I picked the right crate during the Bonus Game.

Other than that, Huge Catch doesn’t have any other features. The game keeps things simple but that makes it feel more relaxed and having a quicker pace.

Conclusion

Huge Catch is the type of slot that is made for casual players, with a small number of effective and popular features. At the same time, it looks great with its distinct style and attention to details. I would have liked to see a little more animations but overall it looks fine.

The payouts are high enough to fit the volatility while the max. win of 2,555x your bet is high enough to keep players interested. I would warn against betting too high as it can quickly deplete your funds. In my experience, the game slowly drained my funds and I never really had a good moment where I made back the coins I spent.

If you’re looking for something fun and interesting but not overly difficult you’ll do fine with Huge Catch. The game is perfectly made for those people that enjoy a casual gameplay experience with a slot that doesn’t do things too differently but is original enough to stick in your mind.
