Introduction

Re-skinned from another NetEnt slot, Happy Riches is a cheerful Asian-influenced title with the potential for huge wins. If you’ve played Flowers then you’ll be very familiar with this slot indeed. NetEnt hasn’t been particularly innovative, opting to keep exactly the same features and mechanics as Flowers. Regardless, this slot still maintains the charm of its twin and is worth a spin or two.

Theme and Graphics

NetEnt have really embraced Asian culture with Happy Riches. From the traditional good fortune symbols to the melodic soundtrack, you really feel the Asian influence and I like it!

The reels are set inside the outline of a stereotypical Chinese temple that sits on the backdrop of a very picturesque blue sky. There are purple, red and gold tones in this game which really helps define the Asian thematic.

I’m not a particularly big fan of soundtracks and it takes a lot for me to like them. However, I found myself warming to Happy Riches. It really does make you feel ‘happy’ and is even somewhat relaxing. It’s hard not to picture yourself in a quaint village in rural China when opening the game, kudos. Problem is, once you hear the soundtrack you won’t be able to get the tune out of your head. Trust me, I tried.

Sadly, when it comes to the graphics I would say they’re average at best. The symbols are crisp, clear and vibrant. However, the slot still manages to look quite dated, which is surprising considering this was launched in 2020. Maybe that’s just what is popular in Asia?

Features

Happy Riches is built in a pretty common 5×3 reel formation but with a very respectable 30 paylines that run left to right only. The golden dragon wilds are your best feature here, as they substitute for all symbols and turn into stacked wilds during the free spins. Unfortunately, that’s about all I can say for the base game as there isn’t much going on. Maybe this was done on purpose as a result of its target market, either way, I didn’t find it overly exciting.

Double symbols = double wins

The only thing Happy Riches has going for it in the base game is the double symbols. All main symbols in the game have a ‘double symbol’ which, as the name suggests, means you can land two of the same symbol. What’s so great about this you ask? Well, land a combination of double symbols and this can lead to 10 of a kind wins. I’ll explain the payouts in the following section.

Free spins

The Free spins feature is really what carries this game. To trigger the feature you need to land four or more of the scatter symbols anywhere on the reels in the base game. What I like about this is the free spin scatter symbol can also appear as a double symbol. Therefore, you can get between 10 and 30 free spins. See below how many scatters trigger how many spins.

4 free spin scatters = 10 free spins 5 free spin scatters = 15 free spins 6 free spin scatters = 20 free spins 7 free spin scatters = 25 free spins 8 free spin scatters = 30 free spins

It might take a while to trigger, but land a combination of double symbols and/or stacked wilds and you can get some seriously fruitful wins. Especially as the free spins round is where you could potentially get the maximum 15,000x multiplier. Yep, you read that right. Another nice feature of the free spins is that all wins during the round have a 3x multiplier. All in all, it’s worth persevering to trigger if only for the potential.

Bets and Payouts

As expected, the main symbols in Happy Riches bear heavy Asian influences with a golden dragon, fortune cat, koi fish, Chinese lanterns and a green amulet, as well as royal symbols. It’s important to reiterate that all main symbols can land as doubles, which offer payouts twice as much as a single premium symbol. This impacts the max wins from the combos – see below for coin payouts.

  • Golden dragon wild – Pays 5,000 for 5 on payline
  • Fortune cat – Pays 2,000 for 10 on payline (combo required)
  • Koi fish – Pays 1,800 for 10 on payline (combo required)
  • Chinese lantern – 1,600 for 10 on payling (combo required)
  • Green amulet – 1,400 for 10 on payline (combo required)
  • Royal symbols – Pay between 200 and 100 for 5 on a payline

Happy Riches is a high variance slot with an RTP of 96.32%. I got a real feel for this when playing the game as it took a good bit of perseverance (and money) to begin receiving half-decent wins. Unfortunately, the maths model just isn’t in our favour, but I guess that’s part of the thrill.

The slot comes with a minimum bet of $0.30 up to a max bet of $75. So if you’re a high roller who likes to bet BIG then this may not quite cut it. However, with a maximum win of 15,000x your stake, even a high roller would be silly to turn their nose up at Happy Riches. Especially when that max win equates to $1,125,000!

Conclusion

It’s a mixed review for Happy Riches. On one hand, the game is quite charming with its nice setting and catchy soundtrack. However, the average graphics, lack of base-game features and a particularly high variance mean you’re playing for the free spins. Plus, it’s not like the game is unique either. All of that meant I found Happy Riches to be quite repetitive and boring after a while. That said, the free spins feature is pretty good and with such high potential is worth at least some of your time.
