Griffin’s Quest follows the mythical being that is on a quest to do something very important. Players are treated to a wide variety of beautiful graphics, a non-standard playing field as well as a selection of features including wilds, free spins and multipliers.
The game was released in 2020 by Kalamba Games, making it one of their newest slots and an excellent way to see what the quality of their games is like now. The slot obviously centres around the mythical beings that are half-lion and half-eagle. The background shows us deep in the mountains, seeing a giant Griffin temple in the background while there are various other temples scattered around the site.
There are a number of griffins and other characters to fill the playing field, which has a somewhat original shape. It has 5 reels with reels 1 and 5 being 4 rows, reels 2 and 4 being 5 rows and reel 3 being 6 rows high. Using the consecutive symbols mechanic wins are calculated by the same symbol appearing on consecutive reels from left to right.
When it comes to the sound design, the developers clearly invested quite some time in getting it right. If you’re taking a break and during the base game you’re treated to a very calm, serene sounding song that plays continuously in the background. Wins are emphasised through simple ethereal sounds as well. The only thing I didn’t like was the unceremonious ticking of the reels.
Griffin’s Quest uses a selection of symbols that more or less fit the theme of the game. Where the high-paying symbols are different griffins and other mythical beings, the low-paying symbols are simple card letters without any real effort made to integrate them into the setting. That does feel like a detriment in the presentation, but it doesn’t matter when it comes to the gameplay.
The game has High Volatility which means you will likely not see a lot of wins during your time in the base game, but when you do manage to get a win it is also more likely to be a lot bigger than average. As a result, players should see their funds stay pretty stable. In my experience, I noticed a steady but slow drop with some spikes to keep the damage contained. I did not have any profits to speak of, however.
If players want to give this slot a try, they can always adjust their bets. The game allows players to pick a bet between $0.60 and $60 per spin. There is also the prospect of winning the jackpot, which is an impressive 26,000x your bet.
When it comes to the symbols in the game, I found them to be distinct enough to be easily recognisable and they have their own colour scheme to help the player see if they’re close to a win or not. From most to least important, the symbols include:
Griffin’s Quest lets players fill up different trackers to activate different features during the free spins mode. The game also includes a bonus wheel that holds different bonuses.
The Bonus Wheel plays an important part in the game but is triggered only occasionally by getting 3 Bonus symbols on the screen. This wheel not only holds different coin wins but also different free spins modes. The likelihood of activating the free spins mode wasn’t very high in my experience and I usually ended up with a coin win.
During the base game, players can improve the quality of their wilds and free spins for when the free spins mode is activated. This is shown by the 3 trackers on the right side of the screen. Once the free spins mode is triggered, the associated tracker is used up and reset to empty while the free spins and multiplier wilds are applied. This means the longer it takes to activate the free spins mode, the more spins the player receives.
Griffin’s Quest is a nice looking slot with a strong sense of character and identity but it suffers a bit from a lack of focus. There are some nice visuals but it’s never really clear what the intended quest was supposed to be. Perhaps including a bonus game or having the free spins mode show the griffin completing the quest would answer those questions.
In comparison, the gameplay is rather simple but solid, with the trackers and the bonus wheel helping the player get some nice wins. The longer a player goes without activating a free spins mode the more they will receive once it does activate.
The coin wins that are usually triggered offer a nice bonus but aren’t enough to carry the game on its own. Do be aware that the trackers make it more attractive to keep playing, so be sure to set a budget before you start spinning.
