Christmas is upon us and it is time to show Ebenezer Scrooge the error of his ways. This slot is a cinematic experience.
A Christmas Carol slot is based on the classic novel by Charles Dickens. Betsoft released it in December of 2015 and it got a lot of attention when it came out. Betsoft did a great job adapting the story and went all out on the animations.
If you don’t know what A Christmas Carol is about, then this slot will teach you the bare minimum. Ebenezer Scrooge is haunted by three ghosts, who will show him the consequences of his stingy life. This time you are sitting right next to him and get to play along.
A Christmas Carol is a beautiful game full of colour. The darkness of Scrooge’s bedroom is pushed aside by the bright ghostly figures as the story unfolds. Though, this game is not just about the appearances, as there is a great game here waiting for you.
A Christmas Carol came out when Betsoft was really pushing their 3D-styled slots. This style choice separated them from the others and made their games look and feel different. It’s always easy to tell which games were done by Betsoft, and that is not a negative thing.
The animation and the characters are amazing. Scrooge is sitting in the bed as the snow slowly falls outside the window covering everything. He’s far from still, as he occasionally glares at the player, rejoices when money is won or cowers under his bed when the ghosts appear. As for the ghosts, you just have to see them for yourself. They are simply breathtaking.
As for the music, there was only one option and Betsoft went for it. We get to hear God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, to which the title of the original story refers. When the reels are still, the song is quietly playing in the background and when you spin the reels, new instruments join in.
What did bother me, was how the music gets cut off at the end of every spin. You can’t play fast enough to keep the livelier version playing and not even the autoplay will do that.
Betsoft added some nice options if the animations get too much for you or your device. You can turn some of them off or adjust the game quality to speed the game up.
The reels are filled with two very different sets of symbols. First one are the low-tier card numbers, which are made of cold, hard iron, and the second set are the warm and colourful high-tier symbols, which depict the type of Christmas that others are having. There are a total of ten regular symbols and four special ones.
The special symbols are the interesting ones in A Christmas Carol. The story needs a roasted turkey, which in this case is the wild. Then there are the three spirits, who come in turns to show Ebenezer Scrooge the past, the present and the future.
The Ghosts of Christmas Past and Yet to Come are the two best symbols in the game. They are the key to free spins and the best hits. They both are equally good and only differ in theme. Free spins have a guaranteed win every time, so you know you want as many of them as possible.
The biggest problem this game has are dry-spells. When I played, I was basically spinning my wheels without any traction until I hit a ghost feature. Most of the base game wins are just your bet back or enough to cover a couple of extra spins.
The game has medium volatility, but it didn’t really feel like it. For me, the wins were all over the place. Sure, I didn’t hit any huge wins that are more common in high-volatility games, but there is a big difference between the base game and the special features.
Ebenezer Scrooge is comfortably sitting in his bed, but not for long. It is time to show him the error of his ways. The spirits are there to grant you free spins and teach Scrooge a lesson. The Ghosts of Christmas Past and Yet to Come are worth free spins if you get at least three of a kind. You can get 3, 6 or 12 spins depending on how many ghosts land on the reels.
The ghosts can retrigger their free spins during the feature. They can even activate on each other’s spins. New spins are added to the back of the line and the current spins are finished first.
Time and the reels are now spinning backwards. The young and spy Ghost of Christmas Past is here to remind Scrooge of his youth. The time of light and joy, when life hadn’t gotten to him yet. The golden memories are now turned into a guaranteed win on every spin.
Time is going forward and the ghastly Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come is here. His gloomy presence shows Scrooge the grim faith he has in store. His spins guarantee you a win from Scrooge’s bountiful coffers. His demise is a victory for everyone else.
The nasty-looking Ghost of Christmas Present is not here to spin your wheels. Every time he shows up in threes, he will turn every spirit on the reels into turkeys, which are wilds. This feature can also activate during any of the free spins.
When you win, you have an option to try to double up your win. Just choose heads or tails and the coin starts to spin. If you were correct, then you double your wins. Otherwise, you lose it all. You can play for as many rounds as you want, but you can’t Double Up a win from a ghost.
This is a Christmas slot through and trough. Betsoft did a great job adapting the classic story into a slot. The game is vibrant and full of life, which is saying much when it’s all about ghosts.
What makes this game different is the amount of care that went into it. Usually, slots that revolve around a holiday are simpler, but not this one. The visuals are done perfectly and the features are interesting.
I enjoyed myself a lot playing A Christmas Carol. The slot isn’t perfect and I did have an issue with the dry-spells. That being said, the game has a lot to offer and it feels very cinematic.
A Christmas Carol is a great slot for those dark December evenings. I doubt many will be interested in this during a scorching heatwave in June. But, I know that I will be returning to this game when the snow covers the land next time.
