Pearl Lagoon takes place deep under the ocean waves, in a lively lagoon where the reels are surrounded by all sorts of animals. Dive deep to find the pearls as well as some multipliers and a free spins mode.

This slot was released way back in 2012 by developer Play ‘n GO, who have been making video slots for a long time now. Even though the graphics are starting to look dated, they still convey the theme and setting very well. We find ourselves at the bottom of the ocean amongst ancient corrals and plenty of animals as we look for treasures we can bring to the surface.

The 5-reel, 3-row playing field has 20 paylines on which to find these treasures in the shape of different animals and card letters. The animals are all drawn in high detail, with most of them playing an animation whenever they’re part of a win. The card letters are a lot less detailed, with mostly the colours standing out.

I thought the music was a little out of place because it was very cheery and upbeat, which doesn’t feel like the right theme for a slot that takes place underwater. At the same time, the music is tropical and smooth which does feel appropriate. It’s a matter of taste whether or not this is something you’d like to have on in the background.

Symbols

The symbols in Pearl Lagoon are starting to look a little outdated but don’t look bad. The animals are those you could reasonably expect to swim by in a lagoon, having some light animations when they are part of a win. The card letters stick out like a sore thumb in comparison. I thought that the colours of some especially were a poor choice, but they do keep things clear.

  • Oyster (Scatter): Get 3 or more Scatter symbols on the screen to activate the Free Spins mode.
  • Dolphin (Wild): Wilds substitute all other symbols in the game except the Scatter symbol. Max. 5,000x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a bet line.
  • Turtle: Max. 750x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a bet line.
  • Crab: Max. 750x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a bet line.
  • Seahorse: Max. 500x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a bet line.
  • Clown Fish: Max. 250x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a bet line.
  • School of Fish: Max. 250x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a bet line.
  • Ace: Max. 150x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a bet line.
  • King: Max. 150x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a bet line.
  • Queen: Max. 125x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a bet line.
  • Jack: Max. 100x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a bet line.
  • 10: Max. 100x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a bet line.

The combination of a high number of different symbols, a moderate amount of paylines and a small number of features means the game lands on a High Volatility. To compensate that a little, the game does offer a max. win of a staggering 15,000x your bet! That’s definitely one of the highest jackpots for a slot without it being a progressive jackpot. Don’t count on hitting it though, this is something only a few people will encounter.

Features

Pearl Lagoon is still from the time where slots were relatively simple, so looking at it through modern eyes makes it seem a little basic. There are a few different features present but these don’t change the core gameplay a lot, nor do they help with getting big wins either. Still, it’s a good middle-ground for players that enjoy the classic slot experience with some extra features.

  • Wild: Wilds substitute all other symbols in the game except the Scatter Symbol. Whenever a wild is part of a win it will also apply a multiplier to that win.
  • Free Spins: Get 3 or more Scatter symbols on the screen to activate the free spins mode. Players get more free spins the more symbols they have on screen. During the free spins mode, it’s possible to retrigger additional free spins.
  • Multipliers: Wilds in both the base game and the free spins mode will apply a multiplier to any wins they are a part of. Scatter symbols during the free spins mode also add a multiplier.

Pearl Lagoon slot multiplier

The Wilds come in the shape of a dolphin but in my experience, they didn’t show up very regularly. When they did, it was a matter of their position if they would help trigger a win. Only when that happen did they apply a multiplier to the total win, which could either be a 2x or 3x win. I wouldn’t consider it an important part of the game, more something that showed up occasionally.

The Free Spins mode was dependent on the Scatter symbols which were about as volatile as the game itself. With that, I mean that I would have long periods of time without a single Scatter and then suddenly a few Free Spins modes in a row. It was really random and unpredictable.

Once the Free Spins mode starts you get 15 free spins or more, depending on the number of Scatters you had on screen. It’s possible to retrigger spins as you play, whenever you get 3 or more additional Scatter symbols during the Free Spins mode. This will increase the total number of free spins you have.

I didn’t think the Free Spins mode was particularly interesting or helpful. There are no special features activated during this mode that aren’t also there during the base game. You’re just as dependent on the chance to win, as always.

Conclusion

Pearl Lagoon gives players a look back at the early days of online slots. The graphics are still good because of their animations and atmosphere but they are beginning to look dated. The background is animated with the sun reflecting on the waves above us and seeing schools of fish swim past. The music is maybe not exactly what I would have picked but it does sound fun and cheerful.

The features don’t do much to augment the gameplay so you’re probably not going to be helped by them a lot. As I was playing my funds stayed pretty stable around where I started, which can be a good or a bad thing. The player has the opportunity to pick a bet between $0.10 and $100 per spin to make it more or less interesting.

If you are nostalgic for some of the older slots, or you simply prefer a classic video slot with only a few features than Pearl Lagoon will probably suit you well. It’s a fun, simple game that’s bound to entertain players for a while!
