Book of Duat reintroduces us to Anna the Explorer who we have seen in previous Quickspin slots. This time, she will venture into ancient Egyptian caves to find the titular book. Meanwhile, the players have to deal with free spins, wilds and stacked symbols.

Released in 2021, this slot feels somewhat derivative of every other game set in Ancient Egypt. Again, we are treated to a series of golden symbols, Egyptian deities and an Indiana Jones-like character as our protagonist. It all looks fine, with different art of Anna when a player gets a big win but it does not feel enough to set itself apart.

The game feels like a pretty standard slot when you start it up for the first time. It uses a 5-reel, 3-row playing field with 10 paylines. As close to a classic video slot as we can get nowadays. That’s not to say there are no modern features though, which I’ll get into later. The symbols are all drawn very well with especially the high-paying symbols looking good.

I can’t say the sound design surprised me but it doesn’t lean on the Egyptian soundtrack as much as other similar slots. It keeps the music very lowkey in the background, with the sound effects for wins and special symbols also rather toned down. I thought this fit the setting quite well and made it feel a bit more mystical.

Book of Duat Highlights

  • Freespins: You can get in-game free spins in Book of Duat.
  • Multiplier: In Book of Duat, the winnings can be multiplied by different multiplier mechanisms.
  • Wilds: Wilds substitute any standard symbol and help create more winning combinations.
  • Stacked symbols: In Book of Duat, the symbols come in tall stacks.
  • Buy bonus game: You can instantly enter the bonus round by paying a lump sum.

Symbols

Book of Duat can’t show us a lot of creativity simply because it’s set in Ancient Egypt. As such, the slot doesn’t really try. The low-paying symbols aren’t even inspired by the setting. Instead, we are treated to the usual number of card letters. They are created specifically for this slot as shown by the little symbols that are attached. The high-paying symbols are nicer to look at but also don’t show off the studio’s creativity.

Players will have to contend with the game’s High Volatility when playing, meaning that wins are rare and spaced far apart. Even when someone does get a win, it’s likely not to be big enough to pay back even a single spin. You will need to get help from one of the features to really be able to come out on top. The slot’s RTP is an average of 96%.

To deal with the difficulty players can choose to either lower or increase their bets. The game allows you to pick between $0.20 and $100 per spin. I used a smaller bet and still felt like my funds were dropping rapidly so do keep a close eye on your coins. Meanwhile, there is a big maximum win of 32,760x your bet to entice players to keep playing.

The symbols in the game are:

  • Wilds: Wilds substitute all regular symbols in the game. Max. 2,500x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line. Get 3 or more Wilds on the screen to activate the free spins mode.
  • Anna the Explorer: Max. 500x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Pharaoh: Max. 200x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Anubis: Max. 75x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Sobek: Max. 75x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Ace: Max. 15x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • King: Max. 15x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Queen: Max. 10x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • Jack: Max. 10x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.
  • 10: Max. 10x your bet with five-of-a-kind on a winning bet line.

Features

Book of Duat has a few different features to change the gameplay. Only one I found really compelling and it is tied closely to the free spins mode. The features you’ll find in the game are:

  • Wilds: Wilds substitute all symbols in the game. They also act as scatters. Get at least 3 on the screen to activate the free spins mode.
  • Free Spins: Players activate the free spins mode by having enough wilds on the screen. Players can augment the number of free spins they receive through the Pick & Click game.
  • Pick & Click: At the start of the free spins mode and at certain points during this game mode, players get to pick from a series of boxes. These hide extra free spins, multipliers and bonus symbols.
  • Multiplier: During the free spins mode, players can activate various multipliers on all wins.
  • Stacked Symbols: Selected symbols will appear stacked, facilitating wins during the free spins mode.

I thought the base game was pretty basic and as such I will not be discussing it too much. There are the usual wilds that can help grant wins but not much else. I did like that Wilds also double as Scatters to trigger a free spins mode. Besides that, Wilds also come with their own payouts and can even grant very big wins.

Once the free spins mode is activated the actually interesting stuff begins. Players will be presented with a 5-reel, 4-row playing field with empty symbols. At the start of the free spins mode players get to turn a number of these before the mode begins. With 3 scatters players get to pick 3, 4 scatters means 6 choices and 5 scatters mean 12. As the bonus game proceeds, additional symbols might be turned. The free spins mode itself is played on a 5-reel, 3-row playing field.

These symbols hide extra free spins, multipliers and symbols. When a symbol is selected it will appear stacked during the free spins mode after other wins are calculated. These stacked symbols are then also counted as scatters.

Conclusion

Book of Duat has unfortunately chosen a very popular setting which makes it hard for any slot to stand out. It feels like the designers never really tried to have it stand out either. The graphics are beautiful but ultimately generic. None of the ideas presented in the game really help it differentiate itself.

As a slot, it’s a fine game. If you don’t care about the setting or you’re a huge fan of Egyptian-styled slots this might be an excellent fit. There aren’t a lot of features and the free spins mode is definitely the highlight. I also found it the only somewhat reliable way to get a big win.

Players that are looking for a rather simple game but with the potential for some big wins might need to consider this slot. If you are someone who is looking for something original, either in presentation or gameplay, it’s probably better to keep searching.
