Ride around the galaxy while bathing in neon glow. Retro Galaxy is a wild slot with some of the best features available.

Microgaming published Half Pixel Studio’s slot Retro Galaxy in August of 2020. This amazing looking slot is full of neon lights and a lot of nice features. This slot might not be innovative, but it sure as heck is fun.

This isn’t the first time we see the 80s retro-futuristic look in a slot. Yggdrasil released their Neon Rush earlier the same year and NetEnt did it first with Neon Staxx five years prior. All these slots play differently, so there is no plagiarism here.

This one takes the best features we have seen in slots and creates the perfect game. Or at least that probably was the original idea behind Retro Galaxy.

Graphics and sound

This is one fine-looking slot. You can see a lot of retro features combined with some more modern touches. The combination works great and the end result is a beautiful game.

The purple galaxy background is really calming and the colour scheme makes the game stand out. It is easy to spot this slot on a casino, just as long as you don’t get it mixed up with Neon Staxx or Neon Rush.

The beauty of this slot is not just limited to the visuals. The music fits the game perfectly and it changes depending on how fast you are playing. If you slow down, so does the music.

There is only one thing that bothered me with the sound effects. The sound of the symbols disappearing from the reels is fine, but can be a bit annoying in the long run. It’s not so bad that I need to mute the game, but after a long play session, I’d rather not hear it again.

Symbols and wins

The reels are full of shiny chrome and neon glow. The slot has ten regular symbols and two special ones, and they all look great together.

The low-tier symbols are the classic card numbers. Unimaginative, but they look fine as neon lights. The high-tier symbols are all perfectly chromed and shine like the bright future of the 80s. The slot features a regular wild and a scatter symbol that both gives you wins and activates the Free Spin feature.

The first feature you see is the Cascading Wins. You can combo up multiple wins with a single spin if the cascade works in your favour. Every winning combination makes way for new symbols, which in turn can cause new winning combinations.

You will also notice pretty quickly that most of the symbols are pretty worthless. This is due to the cascade mechanic and the ever-increasing multiplier. You can get up to 5x wins during the base game and 15x during free spins.

Getting to those free spins is pretty important. The game has high volatility and a low average RTP of 96.05%. This means that you aren’t going to get a lot of decent little wins. You need to hit it big or you won’t get far. This is an all-out slot, where a single spin can be huge.

Features

  • Win All Ways: The slot has 243 paylines

Winning is easier when you don’t have to care about symbols hitting the paylines. Retro Galaxy has 243 paylines, which means that every possible combination is possible. Just as long as you have the same symbol on reels one, two and three, you win.

  • Cascading Wins: Single spin can last for a while

Cascading Wins is a feature that many people love, myself included. It was popularised by Gonzo’s Quest and has been seen in many games since.

Every time you get a winning combination, those symbols are then removed from the reels and new symbols fall in their place. These new symbols can then make new combinations and cause a new cascade. This cycle will continue until there are no more new wins.

  • Chain Multiplier: Increase your multiplier and win more

Most of the regular wins in this game are tiny and to fix that, the game has a multiplier mechanic. Every cascade you get increases your multiplier for the remainder of that spin. The first win pumps it up to 2x, the second to 3x and the third win maxes it out at 5x.

During the Free Spin feature, the multiplier is even better. You can go as high as 15x and it is much easier to keep it up.

  • Free Spins: Get the biggest wins for free

Free Spin feature is simply the best way to win in Retro Galaxy. To get there, you need at least three scatter symbols and the more you hit, the more spins you get. Three scatters is worth 10 spins, 4 is 15 spins and full five scatters give you 20 free spins.

The biggest reason why the free spins are so good is the multiplier. You start with 2x and you can increase it all the way up to 15x. And that is not the best part. The best thing is that the multiplier will not reset between spins. Get it up quickly and all your spins have a massive multiplier.

Final Thoughts

Retro Galaxy is a good all-rounder. The slot does nothing innovative, but instead, it combines the best features of other games in one neat package. It might not be more than the sum of its parts, but these parts add up to a decent score on their own.

The main reason why I first tried this slot was the theme. I love a good 80s look and this slot’s shiny chrome got my attention. This turned out to be a good choice because I ended up playing it for a while and walking away with a nice sum.

The slot is volatile, no questions there. My bankroll went up and down and it wasn’t just once that I was playing my last few coins. All it took was one well-placed activation of the Free Spins feature and I was done for the day.
