There is gold and then there is the Gold of Maya! Are you ready to discover a mysterious land where once an ancient civilization thrived? Step into the Gold of Maya, a 5-reel, 3-row slot with 10 paylines and a progressive jackpot.
Gorgeous graphics and a mix of mystifying sounds await in this medium variance slot released in the summer of 2020.
Gold of Maya works with a gap feature whereby winning tiles are removed from the reels to be substituted for new ones. If the new tiles result in a win then the amount won is multiplied. On the second win, winnings are multiplied by 2, on the third by 3 and the fourth by 4. After the 4th round, all other consecutive wins will continue being multiplied by 4.
There is a toned-down colour palette at work in Gold of Maya which does look good. The symbols are intricately designed, even those which are low-paying. I think I prefer the card suits design to the higher-paying masks. Whilst they are nice to look at, they did feel closer to African tribal masks rather than Mayan ones.
The symbols, from highest to the lowest consist of:
Whenever a win is registered all symbols are obscured until they disappear and a new set of tiles takes their place. Some of these animations are well thought out and even look slightly creepy. Perfectly in sync with the feel of the game.
The scatter tile appears on reels 2, 3, and 4. Three scatter tiles will start the free spins round where you are awarded 15 spins. Here lies the chance to get some good wins under your belt as the multipliers are tripled. On the first step, the win is multiplied by 3, on the second it’s multiplied by 6, on the third by 9 and the 4th by 12. If you continue winning after 4 gaps all winnings will continue to be multiplied by 12.
Apart from the free spins round, there are 4 progressive jackpots up for grabs. At any point during the game, the jackpot round can be triggered as long as the bet falls between the 10 and 10,000 coins. Once you’re in the mini-game you will need to draw 3 of the same cards to win the designated jackpot.
Hand on heart, I am never a fan of these risk games. But the gambling option on Gold of Maya is quite intriguing. This is probably because it is a simple game where you have two choices. With every correct guess, your money doubles. It’s as straightforward as that. And best of all, it is in line perfectly with the theme of the game. So if you do decide to gamble your wins, you are kept in the spirit of the Mayan gold.
In conclusion
It took some time for me to warm up to Gold of Maya. The first time I played it not much happened and I was left a little bored. The bonus round was nowhere to be seen and there was no interesting gap combination.
But then I played it a second time and it made a great impression. I was getting some nice combinations and even managed to get to the bonus round in a very cool way. I had two scatters on the board and a win. When the tiles disappeared a third scatter came down so it was quite a surprise. Then whilst in the bonus round, I got a chain reaction of 5 wins which gave me a good win.
Even though this game has medium variance there is a chance for a max win of 6,000x. Add to that the gambling possibility and you’re looking at a nice payout. Apart from that, there is also the jackpot round which although elusive does promise some truly interesting wins.
