Bow down before the spirit lord, Baron Samedi. See what the cards have in store for you in this feature-filled slot.
Yggdrasil released Baron Samedi in late 2018 during their golden age. Right about this point the developer just started hammering out great slots one after the other. This is one of those amazing games with a great theme and innovative features.
The first thing you will notice here is the heavy use of the theme. The slot is built around the Haitian Vodou religion and one of its more well-known loas, Baron Samedi. The Vodou theme, or as it is more commonly known, Voodoo, has been a popular one all over the western world.
The slot itself is jam-packed with features and has an intriguing card mechanic, which includes collecting them as well. These powerful cards are then used in the Respin and Free Spin features to manipulate the board. Baron Samedi features an above-average RTP of 97% and it is a medium-volatility slot.
Simply put, Baron Samedi is an amazing-looking slot. The theme is heavily utilized and in a good way. It is funny to see that even the play area has been downsized to fit all the extra fluff on the sides. Rum, cigars and dice, everything that Samedi enjoys.
Everything in this game has been built around the theme. Even the tiniest things are thought of and made to look good. Every symbol, every button and every little detail is done right. Even the cards took their style from the ritualistic symbols used in Vodun religion, the vèvès.
The sounds are surprisingly subtle when compared to the visual side of the game. The sound effects are simply there and don’t really stand out. The music, on the other hand, starts off with rhythmic drumming and when the reels start spinning, the rest of the song starts to play. Once again, fitting to the theme and very easy on the ears.
The symbols of the game are good-looking, easily recognisable and, like I said before, fit the theme. There are four high-paying symbols, four low-paying ones and two special symbols in the main game.
The low-tier symbols are jewels with some tiny little details added, like small dice. The high-tier symbols feature Baron Samedi, Brijit and voodoo dolls of both of them. As for the special symbols, we get a wild and a scatter symbol. During the Respin and Free Spin features you can also get some mystery symbols, which all turn into one random symbol at the end of the spin.
The game has medium volatility, which means that you have a better chance of getting more balanced wins during the main game. Sure, the Free Spin feature can hand out massive wins, but it is annoyingly hard to activate. Luckily, the Respin feature is much easier to hit and you will see a lot of that.
The cards are a big thing in Baron Samedi. They can help you out massively or screw you over. The entire game can turn upside down if the cards just say so. You can get complete reels full of wilds, change all low-tier symbols to something better, get a massive multiplier or add mystery symbols. It is all up to chance.
One thing I like about in any slot, is if the game rewards a player for playing a long time. We all know that the longer you play, the likelier it is that the player will lose. Baron Samedi will alleviate this with the card collecting mechanic, which will give you free spins if you complete a collection.
The card deck is a fascinating feature that runs deep in Baron Samedi. There are 36 different cards that have very different effects. The cards are divided into groups and each group has four different power levels.
Every time a card is drawn, you add it to your collection. The top of the card will tell you the level of the card and how many of that card you need to fill your collection. When you get a card completely filled, you win free spins with that card locked.
For example, one first-level card will turn the entire last reel to wilds. The second level of the same card will instead turn the first reel to wilds. The third level will transform reels one and two, and the most powerful card will change the first three reels to wilds.
Do note, that some cards are not that great together. The worst-case scenario is that the cards can create a no-win situation for you.
If you get two scatter symbols, you activate the Voodoo Respin feature. The dealer will draw three cards for you and spin the reels once. You get the effect from all the cards, which can add up to a powerful spin. If you are lucky, the cards are highly synergic and boost each other, but there is a chance that they just mess things up.
Scatter symbols are your ticket to riches in the Free Spin feature. Get at least three Free Spin scatter symbols and you activate the feature. The more scatter symbols you get, the more spins you win. You also get an instant cash prize and it can be a doozy.
At the start of every spin, three cards are drawn from the deck. The cards then power-up that one spin and then get reset. The Free spins are a good way to get cards for your collection, as you get a minimum of 21 cards during the feature.
There is only one bad thing about the Free Spin feature, and that’s how rare they are. If you manage to activate them, enjoy them while they last.
Now, this is a slot for me. The great and mesmerising theme, the innovative card mechanic and a decent chance to hit it big, even with medium volatility, are things that speak to me.
As I played the slot, I did notice that the special features are an important part of winning anything. The regular game will just slowly drain your bankroll, but as soon as you hit those respins or free spins, you are golden. You don’t even need to be insanely lucky when you get there. I just wish the Free Spin feature would activate a bit more often.
The slot has a going on and all of it is built around a great central theme. Yggdrasil really knew how to make the most out of a single character and his surroundings. I am definitely going back to this slot and would advise you to check it out as well if you haven’t already.
