7 Monkeys introduces us to a group of expressive and brightly coloured monkeys that live in the jungle and might liven up our evening. The slot features Stacked Wilds, Multipliers and a Free Spins mode that will possibly result in some interesting wins.
This nice-looking slot was released in 2015 by Pragmatic Play and does a good job at keeping up with newer games in terms of graphics. The 7 monkeys that we’re shown on the 5-reel, 3-row playing field are nicely drawn and given some animations when part of a win. The slot comes with a total of 7 paylines which combines with the number of symbols to reach Medium Volatility.
The background of this slot is very simple, only showing some tree trunks on either side of the playing field. In the background, we can see more trees hidden in the fog but other than that there really isn’t any attention put into the setting. The monkeys themselves are given somewhat of a personality, some of them grimace, some of them leer, some of them frown. It’s subtle but it helps in creating a lively mood.
In terms of sound design, there is really not that much to say. We hear the familiar jungle sounds in the background, mostly singing and chirping birds. When you get a win a brief jingle plays. If the win involves a Wild, we’ll hear the monkeys call out. For the rest, the game is pretty quiet and lends itself perfectly to a casual play session.
As can be expected, 7 Monkeys would include 7 different monkeys as the main symbols. Bizarrely, that is not the case. Instead, there are 6 monkeys (including the Wild) and the 7th symbol is a Banana symbol. Why the game is called 7 Monkeys, I have no idea. There aren’t really easily distinguishable low- and high-paying symbols even though the different monkeys have different values. Players can pick a bet between $0.07 and $35 per spin to augment their risk and possible reward. Speaking of rewards, the max. win is 4,500x your bet.
I found the monkeys to be nicely designed, massive manes framing their face. Each of the monkeys has its own colour and they all have a different expression. This makes it very easy to spot wins, as well as special features such as the free spins mode or a Wild.

We can see that in the base game, where only the Wilds feature is activated and it is not very helpful most of the time. I found the base game to be rather boring, with the occasional win but nothing that will break the bank.
In contrast, the Free Spins mode isn’t necessarily a lot more exciting but the features work better and the player receives a massive amount of free spins. I would regularly play with 50 or more free spins as re-triggering them was quite common.
During the free spins mode, players are more likely to have Stacked Wilds show up that can help facilitate wins. Whenever the Free Spins mode is triggered, players also activate a multiplier that is applied to all wins during this mode.
When getting 3 Scatters the player receives 50 free spins and a 1x multiplier. 4 Scatters brings this up to 100 free spins and a 2x multiplier. Finally, 5 scatters gives players 150 free spins and a 3x multiplier.

7 Monkeys is a bit of a weird game, starting off with the wrongly counted name. The free spins mode is definitely the highlight of the game but even then the volatility won’t guarantee any big wins. I did find my funds to stay pretty close to my starting point the entire time, so players that don’t enjoy too much risk and just want to spin some reels will likely enjoy this game.
The graphics are great and I liked the characters they managed to give the monkeys with only a few drawings. That said, there aren’t a lot of animations and the symbols are very similar to each other. The special features in the game also don’t trigger anything unique, unfortunately. The Stacked Wilds aren’t a 1×3 symbol but just 3 Wilds stacked on top of each other.
Players that want to play something simple but enjoyable with nice graphics but not too many frills will probably have a good time with 7 Monkeys. Power players that are desperate for a challenge might look elsewhere, as will players looking for a unique experience.
